Clinical and Ancillary Services Leadership Opportunities Across California

Rural Staffing Services partners with rural hospitals, clinics, public hospital districts, regional health systems, community health centers, tribal healthcare organizations, and healthcare organizations throughout California to identify experienced leaders across clinical and ancillary services.

We are currently connecting with professionals who may be interested in active and upcoming sterile processing, surgical services, laboratory, imaging, pharmacy, respiratory therapy, rehabilitation, cardiopulmonary, diagnostic services, and related department leadership opportunities across California.

These opportunities may include leadership within Critical Access Hospitals, community hospitals, public hospital districts, Rural Health Clinics, Federally Qualified Health Centers, tribal healthcare organizations, outpatient centers, specialty clinics, long-term care organizations, and integrated rural healthcare systems.

This Is More Than a Department Leadership Role

In California's rural communities, clinical and ancillary leaders play an essential role in keeping healthcare services safe, reliable, and available across geographically diverse and sometimes isolated regions.

In many communities, access to laboratory testing, imaging, surgery, respiratory care, rehabilitation, pharmacy, or specialty services may depend on the strength and stability of one local department.

These leaders may oversee smaller teams with broad responsibilities, support services across multiple locations, coordinate with regional and tribal partners, and help maintain access when staffing, transportation, wildfire, weather, equipment, housing, or supply challenges arise.

The strongest leaders understand both the technical demands of their specialty and the importance of communication, teamwork, staff development, cultural respect, and operational consistency.

They are visible, practical, collaborative, and willing to help solve problems beyond the boundaries of a single department.

Opportunities May Include

This application may connect you with current or upcoming roles such as:

  • Sterile Processing Supervisor or Manager
  • Surgical Services Director or Manager
  • Perioperative Services Director or Manager
  • Operating Room Director or Manager
  • Laboratory Director or Manager

  • Diagnostic Services Director or Manager
  • Ancillary Services Director
  • Clinical Services Director
  • Regional Clinical Services Leader
  • Clinical Department Manager or Supervisor
  • Senior department leadership roles within rural hospitals, regional systems, clinics, tribal healthcare organizations, and community healthcare organizations

What You May Lead

Responsibilities will vary by organization, department, community, and position and may include:

  • Providing operational and clinical leadership for a specialty department or service line
  • Supporting safe, high-quality, patient-centered, and community-focused care
  • Leading, mentoring, and developing clinical, technical, or support teams
  • Managing staffing, scheduling, productivity, call coverage, and department workflows
  • Supporting recruitment, retention, orientation, training, and employee engagement
  • Developing and maintaining policies, procedures, protocols, and quality standards
  • Ensuring compliance with regulatory, accreditation, licensing, infection-prevention, and safety requirements
  • Preparing for surveys, inspections, audits, credentialing reviews, and departmental assessments
  • Managing supplies, equipment, vendors, contracts, budgets, and capital needs
  • Planning for equipment maintenance, replacement, and supply-chain challenges in rural or geographically isolated locations
  • Improving communication and coordination across departments, facilities, tribal programs, and communities
  • Supporting process improvement, service growth, access expansion, and operational efficiency
  • Collaborating with physicians, nurses, executives, regional leaders, tribal partners, and other department managers
  • Monitoring quality, safety, productivity, staffing, access, and service performance
  • Supporting telehealth, regional consultation, and care coordination when specialty resources are not locally available
  • Helping maintain services during vacancies, wildfire impacts, severe weather, transportation delays, or other operational challenges
  • Supporting teams that may serve multiple communities or facilities
  • Helping ensure essential healthcare services remain available closer to home

What You Will Bring

Qualifications will vary by opportunity, but organizations may seek:

  • Progressive experience in the relevant clinical or ancillary specialty
  • Previous leadership experience as a director, manager, supervisor, regional leader, or comparable department professional
  • Strong knowledge of department operations, quality, safety, compliance, and regulatory requirements
  • Experience leading teams, managing workflows, and supporting employee development
  • The ability to collaborate across clinical, operational, executive, tribal, and regional teams
  • Experience with budgeting, staffing, equipment planning, supply management, or performance improvement
  • The ability to lead effectively when staffing, specialty support, transportation, or resources may be limited
  • Experience serving rural, tribal, underserved, agricultural, or geographically isolated populations
  • Experience with rural hospitals, Critical Access Hospitals, public hospital districts, FQHCs, Rural Health Clinics, tribal healthcare organizations, long-term care organizations, or community healthcare organizations
  • Experience supporting services across multiple locations or significant geographic distances may be valuable
  • Relevant education, licensure, registration, or certification based on the specialty
  • A visible, practical, dependable, and relationship-focused leadership style

Specific qualifications will depend on the position.

Some opportunities may require or prefer credentials related to nursing, sterile processing, laboratory science, radiologic technology, pharmacy, respiratory care, rehabilitation, cardiopulmonary services, or another clinical specialty.

Licensure, credentialing, travel, call, and experience requirements will depend on the organization and role.

Types of Opportunities

Opportunities may include:

  • Permanent leadership positions
  • Interim leadership assignments
  • Regional roles serving multiple communities

  • Temporary-to-permanent opportunities
  • Short-term departmental stabilization or program support

The schedule, compensation, call expectations, travel requirements, housing, credentialing, department responsibilities, and employment structure will be explained before you decide whether to move forward with a specific opportunity.

Why Rural California?

California's rural healthcare organizations serve an extraordinary range of communities, from mountain towns and agricultural valleys to forests, high desert regions, tribal lands, remote coastal communities, and small towns located far from major population centers.

Some communities sit along major highways and regional corridors. Others may be hours from larger medical centers, specialty providers, and tertiary services.

These distances make strong clinical and ancillary leadership especially important.

A reliable laboratory, imaging department, pharmacy, respiratory therapy team, rehabilitation program, or surgical service can determine whether patients receive care locally or must travel significant distances away from home.

Leading a clinical or ancillary service in rural California offers the opportunity to know your team, understand the community, strengthen essential services, and see the direct impact of your work.

You may help stabilize a department, develop local staff, expand a service, replace aging equipment, strengthen quality systems, or improve coordination between a rural clinic, tribal healthcare organization, public hospital district, and regional hospital.

The impact may be felt not only by patients, but also by families, employees, community partners, and the broader healthcare system.

This work requires adaptability, resourcefulness, operational judgment, and a genuine commitment to keeping care available close to home.
