Job Scope: Cabling and Network Technician

The Cabling and Network Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and support of structured cabling systems and network infrastructure in commercial buildings, offices, retail outlets, schools, industrial facilities, and other non-data-center environments. The technician ensures reliable connectivity for voice, data, wireless, security, and communication systems.

Key Responsibilities

Structured Cabling Installation

• Install, route, terminate, and label copper and fiber optic cabling.
• Install Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A, and fiber optic network cables.
• Perform cable pulling through conduits, trunking, cable trays, and ceiling spaces.
• Install patch panels, wall outlets, faceplates, and network cabinets/racks.
• Ensure installations comply with industry standards and client specifications.

Network Equipment Installation

• Install and mount network switches, routers, wireless access points, and related equipment.
• Perform physical setup and basic configuration of network devices.
• Connect and organize patch cords within communication cabinets.
• Assist in deployment of Wi-Fi infrastructure and LAN connectivity.
• Conduct site surveys to assess cabling routes, equipment locations, wireless coverage requirements, and installation constraints.

Testing and Commissioning

• Conduct cable testing using certification and verification tools.
• Test copper and fiber optic links for performance and connectivity.
• Troubleshoot cable faults, connectivity issues, and signal degradation.
• Generate test reports and documentation upon project completion.

Maintenance and Support

• Perform preventive maintenance on network infrastructure.
• Diagnose and rectify network connectivity issues.
• Replace defective cables, connectors, patch panels, and network hardware.
• Respond to service calls and support requests from customers or internal users.
• Support IMAC (Install, Move, Add, and Change) activities for network, wireless, and end-user infrastructure.

Documentation

• Maintain accurate records of cable routes, labeling, and asset inventories.
• Update network diagrams and as-built documentation.
• Prepare installation reports, service reports, and maintenance records.
• Document changes and upgrades to network infrastructure.
• Assist in preparing bill of materials (BOM), material lists, and quotation inputs based on site survey findings and project requirements.

Site Coordination

• Coordinate with project managers, clients, subcontractors, and other trades.
• Attend site meetings and provide technical input when required.
• Communicate with customers during surveys, installations, and support activities to gather technical requirements and provide project updates.
• Ensure work is completed according to project schedules and quality standards.
• Assist in planning cable pathways and equipment locations.
• Coordinate project schedules, resource requirements, and site activities with customers, vendors, subcontractors, and internal teams.

Safety and Compliance

• Follow workplace safety regulations and company procedures.
• Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Maintain safe working practices when using ladders, lifts, power tools, and testing equipment.
• Ensure installations comply with local building codes, telecommunications standards, and industry best practices.

Reporting Structure

• Reports to: Network Supervisor / Project Manager / Technical Services Manager

This scope covers both project-based installation work and ongoing maintenance support for non-data-center network environments.
