Position Summary

The Business Services Manager position is within the firm’s Tax Advisory division, responsible for leading the delivery of high‑quality financial reporting, compliance, and advisory services while supporting the team’s broader tax strategy. Although the role sits within the Tax Advisory team, its primary focus is business services: managing workflow, reviewing financial statements, overseeing compliance jobs, and developing team capability.

The Manager also contributes to tax compliance and tax‑related advisory work, ensuring that business services outputs integrate seamlessly with the firm’s tax requirements. This role is central to maintaining strong client relationships, driving process improvements, and upholding the firm’s standards of professionalism and service excellence.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership, Team Development & Quality Assurance

  • Lead, mentor, and develop business services staff within the Tax Advisory team, providing guidance on technical matters, workflow management, and professional development.
  • Review compliance jobs, financial statements, and tax‑related work prepared by junior staff, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and adherence to accounting standards and tax legislation.
  • Provide constructive review points and on‑the‑job training to address technical knowledge gaps across both business services and tax fundamentals.
  • Monitor team KPIs, manage minor performance issues, and contribute to formal performance review processes.
  • Confidently step into leadership responsibilities in the absence of senior tax leadership.

Business Services & Financial Reporting

  • Oversee the preparation and review of financial statements and workpapers for a diverse portfolio of clients, ensuring timely delivery and high‑quality output.
  • Prepare and review complex multi‑entity jobs, demonstrating expert knowledge of Xero, MYOB, XPM, and related software.
  • Produce clear, well‑structured workpapers that set a standard for junior team members and support tax advisory workflows.
  • Complete special advisory work including forecasts, budgets, structuring considerations, and other value‑add engagements.
  • Maintain strong understanding of family group structures and entity interactions, including trading, investment, and beneficiary relationships.

Tax Compliance Integration

  • Prepare and review tax compliance work as required, including individual, corporate, trust, BAS/IAS, payroll tax, and FBT returns.
  • Ensure business services outputs (financial statements, workpapers, reconciliations) align with tax advisory requirements and support accurate tax outcomes.
  • Provide basic tax guidance to clients and team members, escalating complex matters to senior tax leadership where appropriate.
  • Delegate tax research tasks to junior staff and provide feedback on accuracy and quality.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of relevant Australian tax legislation and communicate key changes to clients and the team.

Workflow, Budgeting & Process Improvement

  • Manage workflow autonomously, including proactive delegation, prioritisation, and accurate budget forecasting with minimal write‑offs.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements across business services and tax processes, contributing to best‑practice methodologies within the Tax Advisory team.
  • Support senior leadership in operational initiatives and complex technical matters.

Client Relationship Management

  • Build and maintain strong client relationships through proactive communication, timely responses, and deep understanding of client industries and regions.
  • Provide clear, practical solutions to complex accounting and tax‑related issues.
  • Uphold professionalism, integrity, and exceptional client service standards.

Key Skills & Attributes

  • Demonstrated leadership capability with experience mentoring junior staff.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear, concise client correspondence.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, workflows, and deadlines independently.
  • Advanced technical knowledge across financial reporting, compliance, and foundational tax principles.
  • Strong relationship‑building skills and a client‑centric approach.
  • Adaptability and proactive commitment to continuous learning and industry awareness.
  • High level of professionalism, integrity, and service excellence.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting.
  • Professional qualifications such as CA ANZ, CPA Australia, or CTA highly regarded.
  • Minimum 4+ years’ experience in public practice accounting.
  • Demonstrated experience preparing and reviewing financial statements, workpapers, and multi‑entity jobs.
  • Knowledge of tax principles and experience reviewing individual, corporate, trust, BAS/IAS, payroll tax, and FBT returns.
  • Proficiency in Xero, XPM, MYOB, and related accounting/tax software.
  • Experience preparing forecasts, budgets, and advisory‑type work.
  • Proven ability to research technical topics and draft basic advice when required
