First line risk is accountable for identifying and reporting risks and working with the business to mitigate them to a level that is within the Board risk appetite
The Business Partner, 1st Line Risk role will work side-by-side with leaders in the business to drive operational resilience and strengthen our 1st line of defence.
This role will serve as a trusted business partner and a key point of contact for First Line Risk management matters. It will establish positive working relationships with key stakeholders in the business and help to design strategies to enhance decision making, promote a positive culture and drive the effective management of risks within the business
The role will be responsible for working with leaders to:

  • Understand set levels of risk appetite, consider potential risks in business decision-making and the outcomes of those risks in relation to risk appetite. Take action to return to appetite as soon as practicable when operating outside of it.
  • Ensure the business is operating within the requirements of frameworks, policies, systems and processes for risk management, by translating requirements into actions within the business and implementing processes and controls to meet requirements.
  • Proactively identify, evaluate, own, and manage the risks within their domain, including compliance obligations.
  • Ensure adequate capacity and capability to manage the risks that arise from business activity.


The role will form part of, and collaboratively contribute to, the Risk & Compliance department that is responsible for the overall management of all activities that form part of our Control, Assurance and Governance frameworks within RS. This role will work to actively drive down Risk within the business with support and direction from the Senior Manager 1st Line Risk.

Key Accountabilities and main responsibilities
Strategic Focus

  • Align with other teams within RS to push forward with our ‘Risk as a mindset’ approach
  • Uplift capability and risk awareness of all staff


Operational Management

  • Support the development of First Line Risk Management protocols and train departments on implementation
  • Proactively identify emerging risks and report to relevant stakeholders
  • Monitor implementation of risk mitigation plans to ensure efforts are proceeding as required
  • Actively tracking all outstanding mitigations and treatments
  • Liaise with department heads on the adequacy of proposed actions in management of risk areas highlighted in internal audit reports
  • Evaluate the adequacy of the company’s internal control framework in addressing risks and accomplishing the company’s goals and objectives
  • Liaise with departmental heads in ensuring completion of risk registers on a regular basis
  • Production of presentations, as and when, required
  • Identify training needs for First Line Risk management within the business and oversee development of risk competence and awareness across the company
  • Guiding integration of First Line Risk management with other organisational planning and management activities
  • Conduct Assurance mapping activities across RS
  • Attend regular Early Change Assessments (ECA) to provide Risk Guidance on projects and transitions
  • Review and attend BRD documents as and when required
  • Take a continuous improvement approach the risk management strategy, propose and suggest improvements in terms of the risk management processes being used by the company to assure the organizational achievement in this area.


People Leadership

  • Ability to uplift capability and develop staff
  • Support staff to ensure they are meeting all required risk principles
  • Communicate effectively so staff are all clearly working towards same objectives and aligned to the needs of the business, with the ability to adapt and shift as needed


Governance & Risk

  • Ensure adherence to legal and regulatory requirements
  • Support Link Group assurance programs that deliver effective risk management and compliance practices
  • Attendance at relevant committee meetings
  • Monitor and report on compliance with regulatory requirements to Line Two where required

Experience & Personal Attributes
Essential Criteria

  • A proven ability to coordinate and manage competing activities, at one time with the ability to prioritise accordingly. Demonstrated knowledge of Risk principles
  • Personal commitment to, and visible role modelling of, the organisation's behaviours and values.
  • A Risk mindset, with extensive knowledge of Superannuation legislation and regulations.
  • Ability to review and develop strong understanding of complex processes as well as develop recommendations to improve the controls over such processes.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong stakeholder management experience and ability to interact with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Understanding of internal control frameworks and how they work within our business with a view to help drive, shift and change these as required to meet overall business objectives
  • 3+ years financial services experience and tertiary qualified (business degree)
  • 3+ years’ experience in Operational risk and/or Compliance or related disciplines
  • Able to build strong, open and collaborative working relationships
