Under immediate direction and in compliance with straightforward and standardized policies, procedures, and rules, assists customers with business licensing processes and inquiries. Conveys information regarding state laws and local ordinances concerning business licenses. Assists in researching information for business licenses as needed. Enters information into data management system as well as creates and maintains electronic licensing files. Processes fee payments and balances cash drawer on a daily basis.

  • Process Business Licenses: Serve as the first point of contact for customers renewing or seeking a new business license. Receive, review, and process applications for licenses ensuring all appropriate information is provided and all data is verified for accuracy (e.g., dates, addresses, tax map number, etc.). Calculate, receive, and process applicable fees. Prepare and balance daily payments for submission to the Revenue Administrator. Review and process license renewals.

  • Provide Customer Service: Provide general information about the licensing process and educate customers on state laws and local ordinances governing all business license regulations (e.g., penalties for operating without a license, types of licenses, etc.). Provide information on applicable state licenses (e.g., ABC or DHEC). Research and assist customers in resolving license issues within scope of authority. As necessary, refer customers to the appropriate department/personnel for specific services.

  • Provide Administrative Support: As assigned, provide general office and administrative support. Receive and direct various phone calls and mail correspondence. Assist customers with online application submittals. Prepare mailings for new or renewal license information.Maintain background checks concerning business licenses as well as various other files.

Qualifications

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Over one (1) year of clerical office experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Customer service experience.
  • Experience handling and balancing payments.
  • Municipal Association of South Carolina Business License Official Accreditation.

Driver's License Requirements

  • Valid South Carolina Class D Driver's License.

  • Forms, applications, and documents needed for the administration of business licenses.

Ability to:

  • Communicate laws, ordinances, and policies both orally and in writing in a clear, concise, and tactful manner.
  • Review forms, applications, and related documents for accuracy and completeness.
  • Accurately input data from applications into data management system.
  • Research forms, websites, manuals, and other sources of regulation.
  • Troubleshoot, research, and solve customer complaints and issues.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public.
  • Regularly attend work and arrive on time for the designated work schedule.
  • Read and comprehend manuals, policies, and ordinances.
  • Make mathematical calculations and draw logical conclusions; work with fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions and measurements.
  • Write reports, prepare letters, summaries, meeting minutes, and compose emails in a clear and professional manner.
  • Operate general office equipment to include scanner, printer, copier, multi-line telephone, and computer with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Utilize specialized software and systems to include credit card machine, permitting software, licensing software, and various other computer programs.
