We are seeking a motivated Business Intelligence Engineer IV to join our growing Business Intelligence and Analytics team. In this role, you will help develop, implement, and maintain data visualization and reporting solutions that support business processes across UofL's Health Science Center (HSC). Working under the guidance of senior team members and the Director of Business Intelligence and Analytics, you will translate business needs into clear, actionable dashboards and reports.

The ideal candidate enjoys solving problems with data, is eager to learn new tools and techniques, and can collaborate with both technical and non-technical partners. This role supports the analytics team and the HSC Finance and Administration team in advancing our digital transformation and executing our BI/analytics strategy. Success requires curiosity, attention to detail, and comfort working across multiple systems and data sources.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Understand and manage the data needs of various stakeholders.

  • Develops new dashboards/reports, as well as maintain/enhance existing ones, utilizing the UofL BI tools and tech stack, with PowerBI.

  • Assist with the design, development, and maintenance of underlying data model, utilizing MS SQL Server Analysis Services, Alteryx, DAX, and M.

  • Manage and develop scalable financial tools or reports that align, and simplify, monthly business reviews, annual planning, and forecasting processes.

  • Data Visualization Expertise: dashboard creation, architecture, maintenance and optimization and ensuring adherence to data visualization best practices

  • Business Partnership: Partner with various non-technical business partners ranging from the C-Suite to the entry level analyst, data scientists and Director of BI and Analytics on solution requirements to design solutions. Execute the Senior Director of Business Intelligence and Analytics vision translating data into actionable insights addressing business needs and objectives. Delves deeply into technology applications and a varying array of large data sources, determining the appropriate data for the analysis to be performed, discovering issues, identifying potential uses, and preparing for analysis.

  • Data Management: Works with the Senior Director of Business Intelligence and Analytics to streamline established data warehouses, initiates new development of databases, production data, and available tools to build strategic datasets in support of key initiatives. Establishes and systematically performs processes to assess and validate data accuracy. Successful candidate will implement automated ETL process ensuring data quality, accuracy is maintained and facilitates advanced analytical capabilities including diagnostic, descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive analytical capabilities.

  • Process Automation: Familiar with our current technology stack (PowerBI, Fabric, SQL, PowerApps, Power Automate, Alteryx, etc.) to systematically perform automation of current manual processes to eliminate human error, further improving consistency, productivity and accuracy. Utilize technology to build automation services which includes data collection and analysis that will enable the team to drive innovation and automation of operation systems.

  • Configuration Management: Work directly with users to identify needs and resolve software configuration problems. Ability to modify software to meet user needs and monitor and troubleshoot common and daily tasks and events as well as changes.

  • Advanced Analytics: Works closely with the Director of Business Intelligence to implement AI and Machine Learning capabilities across the Health Science Center as well advancing the use of predictive and prescriptive analytics.

  • Project Management: Independently gathers requirements from appropriate business partners for project, including necessary data for analysis to be performed. Develops project plans, executes on deliverables within agreed upon timeframes, manages deadlines, communicates progress and makes recommendations to address issues.

  • Liaise with data team for proper data sourcing and transformation for BI data model, with a solid understanding of data sources and their ultimate application and relation to the reports.

  • Responsible for the design and implementation of scalable & fault tolerant data applications (on-prem SQL & cloud based) to store and process large amounts of data from upstream sources with high availability.

  • Responsible for full life cycle methodology including change management processes and ensuring changes are properly tested and migrated to production.

  • Understand and maintain compliance with data management best practices and standards established by the Director of Business Intelligence and Analytics. Review and optimize current data management procedures ensuring they are aligned with the industry leading practices. Stay up to date on latest trends in data engineering, visualization and recommended best practices.

  • Adhering to best practices in securely storing, backing up, and archiving data.

  • Responsible for design, development, testing oversight and production implementation using a flexible framework of applications including but not limited to SQL, Alteryx, Python, etc.

  • Collaborate with team members to ensure appropriate data solutions to meet business goals as well as identify and define necessary system and process enhancements.

  • Work closely with Product Owners, Product Managers, Program Manager, Scrum Masters and Team Members in a Scaled Agile framework.

  • Ascertains and executes plans to build, implement and maintain operations reports using available tools and programming languages. Monitors and provides feedback on model performance and recalibrates model as necessary.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1–3 years of experience in business intelligence, analytics, data engineering, or a related field.

  • Experience developing dashboards or reports with BI tools such as Power BI or Tableau (Power BI preferred but not required).

  • Foundational understanding of ETL, data warehousing, and analytics concepts.

  • Working knowledge of SQL and at least one data platform (e.g., Microsoft SQL Server).

  • Exposure to DAX, M, or a programming/statistical language (e.g., Python, R, SAS, Alteryx) is a plus.

  • Ability to translate business questions into reporting solutions and communicate results to non-technical audiences.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Professional, proactive demeanor and strong interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to build collaborative working relationships with technology and business partners.

  • Experience with relational databases and query tools (e.g., SQL, SAS).

  • Familiarity with DAX and M.

  • Experience with Power BI or similar data visualization technologies.

  • Exposure to PowerApps, Power Automate, or similar tools.

  • Experience with process documentation.

  • Strong attention to detail and quality control.

  • Eagerness to learn, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

  • Experience in higher education, healthcare, finance, or operations analytics is a plus.
