Department Overview

The mission of the Information Technology Group (ITG) is to provide and support technology and information services that enable OHSU to be a national leader in health and science innovation. The work of the Business Intelligence Management Division (BIAA) ensures that the informational assets of the OHSU enterprise are leveraged to enhance financial, clinical, operational, and research decision-making.

Positioned at the confluence where the business of patient care meets the need for insights and data driven decisions, this role provides the opportunity to use data analysis and development skills to improve the health and well-being of Oregonians and beyond. This role also functions as a clinical informatics partner, translating clinical and operational needs into actionable dashboards, standardized metrics, and reporting frameworks that support care delivery and performance improvement.

This position will be dedicated to supporting the Knight Cancer Group, OHSU Knight Cancer Institute (KCI) and the oncology service lines reporting and analytics needs across a variety of data domains, including: clinical, operational, staffing, and related subject areas associated with enhancing cancer care delivery. These support responsibilities include consulting on dashboard design, collaborate on metric definition, and support reporting strategy in collaboration with clinical and operational stakeholders in support of KCI strategic goals. The technical deliverables of this position include developing and maintaining standardized KPIs, ensuring metric alignment across service lines, and promoting data literacy and consistent interpretation of analytics.

The ideal candidate will possess a good understanding of healthcare and cancer specific terminology, strong SQL skills, experience navigating Epic and using Record Viewer for Analysis, and experience developing reports using the Epic Caboodle Data Warehouse and Epic Clarity Data model. Experience with clinical quality metrics, registry reporting, or oncology-specific performance measures is strongly preferred.

Function/Duties of Position

Clinical Informatics Solution Consultation, Development, Testing, and Training

Use business requirements to develop BI solutions, including ad hoc operational and analytical reports, dashboard applications, and scheduled reports. Translate clinical and operational requirements into standardized metrics, KPIs, and dashboard designs that support care delivery, quality improvement, and performance monitoring.

  • Develops BI solutions using the following tools:
    • Business Objects: BOBJ Web Intelligence and Crystal.
    • Epic: Reporting Workbench reports & templates, Radar dashboards, SlicerDicer analyses, Column Editor, PAF creation, CER rules.
    • Clarity and Caboodle data warehouses.
    • Azure and Power BI.
  • Identifies opportunities for optimizing solutions and leveraging existing reporting assets to meet business requirements.
  • Standardizes metric definitions and ensures alignment with organizational, regulatory, and oncology-specific reporting frameworks.
  • Works closely with other KCI Data Operations and OHSU IT staff to meet expectations for design reviews and coding standards.
  • Provides issue resolution during Quality Assurance / User testing.
  • Troubleshoot and analyze data processing failures and data issues using Chart review, Record Viewer, Clarity Data dictionary, and Caboodle Data Dictionary.
  • Work through established processes to resolve system or data problems, and communicate updates and status to affected groups.
  • Recommend changes to data models and metadata models to improve existing structures and code to increase performance, reliability, and efficiency.
  • Provides clinical informatics and technical expertise to departmental analysts, engineers and clinical customers, including guidance on metric interpretation, dashboard utilization, and data-driven decision-making.
  • Request migration of solution object through the SDLC.
  • Validating and testing with the customer as frequently as necessary to get sign-off that the solution meets the requirements.
  • Ensures that validated outputs accurately reflect clinical workflows, operational definitions, and intended use in decision-making.
  • Delivers end-user training on dashboards, reports, and metrics, including education on appropriate interpretation and limitations of the data.

Business Analysis

Conduct discovery sessions with KCI/KCG end users, front line staff, leadership, Workflow Analysts, and Informaticians to gather and document detailed requirements that inform the design and development of new or modifications to existing BI solutions. Facilitate discussions to define clinical and operational metrics, ensuring alignment with institutional standards, quality programs, and oncology-specific initiatives.

  • Workflow and Data analysis for incoming requests.
  • Assess current-state vs. future-state workflows to ensure proposed reporting solutions align with clinical practice and operational goals.
  • Profiling of source data to identify data lineage, source tables, data definitions and business rules.
  • Design intuitive, user-centered dashboards and reporting solutions that support clinical workflows and enable actionable insights.
  • Review Epic Userweb, Epic hosted foundation, and TS support to leverage Epic foundation and Epic integrated solutions when possible.
  • Incorporate clinical best practices and benchmark metrics when available to ensure consistency with industry standards.

Project Management, Tool Leadership, and Mentorship

Serve as a clinical informatics and analytics content expert, ensuring that data, metrics, and reporting outputs align with clinical intent and organizational priorities.

  • Primary representation for Clinical BI in division and department level projects; will include impact analysis of Clinical BI stewarded content, the development of project plans, assignment and/or ownership of project tasks, oversight of project task executions, status reporting to leadership.
  • Leading the creation, maintenance, and improvement of standard work and process documentation. This includes all reference documentation categorized as a responsibility of a joint KCI-BIAA analyst in the BIAA RACI Matrix. This documentation will serve as the knowledgebase for all junior staff.
  • Expert level understanding of BIAA toolset, serving as the go-to technical expert in an ETL or BI application.
  • Provides training/mentor assistance to lower-level analysts in support of Knight Data Operations efforts.

Production Support and Continuous Improvement

Respond to requests from KCI/KCG customers, to fix issues or apply enhancements to existing production reports. Evaluate enhancement requests for alignment with existing metric definitions, dashboard standards, and clinical priorities.

  • Communication with the customer to get clarification on support needs.
  • Perform high level data analysis and initial sizing of the work to be done. Assess impact to existing metrics, dashboards, and downstream reporting.
  • Facilitate and coordinate the solution with other groups, e.g. Workflow, BIAA and other IT groups, as needed.
  • Design, develop and test the solution.
  • Work with the Customer to validate the solution and close the Ticket.
  • Coordinate the migration of the changed report objects.
  • Continually work to improve existing processes and daily work.
  • Identify opportunities to improve metric standardization, dashboard usability, and data accessibility for clinical users.
  • Log improvement opportunities for department or system.
  • Facilitate the prioritization of improvement opportunities with organizational leadership.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in computer science, a related field, or a clinical field and four years of work-related experience in the information technology field or a combination of clinical or operational healthcare environments; OR

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, a related field, or a clinical field and six years of work-related experience in the information technology field or a combination of clinical or operational healthcare environments; OR

  • Associate’s degree in computer science, a related field, or a clinical field and seven years of work-related experience in the information technology field or a combination of clinical or operational healthcare environments; OR

  • Eight years work related experience in the information technology field or a combination

    of clinical or operational healthcare environments; OR

  • Equivalent combination of education and experience where one year of experience will be substituted for an Associate’s degree and two years of experience will be substituted for a Bachelor’s degree.

  • Epic Clarity/Caboodle Certifications within 6 months of hire.

Experience

  • Minimum three years paid work experience as Data Analyst, Data Engineer, or BI Developer (or equivalent classification).
  • Demonstrated experience with developing reports and dashboards in Business Objects Web Intelligence or equivalent toolset.
  • Experience with facilitating and documenting system requirements sessions.
  • Experience creating technical documentation of reports and data/report models.
  • Minimum three years working with relational databases.
  • Experience with utilizing star schema data stores as the basis for report development.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Analytics experience at an academic medical center cancer center or healthcare related organization.
  • Experience with utilizing star schema data stores as the basis for report development.
  • Two years of experience with developing Business Objects Universes using the Information Design Tool (IDT).
  • Two years of experience with developing in Tableau.
  • Experience with clinical quality metrics, registry reporting, or oncology-specific performance measures is strongly preferred.
  • Experience processing and analyzing oncology/ cancer care datasets.
  • Experience with the following clinical care and operational data sets: Referrals, appointment scheduling, physician capacity, room capacity, etc.
  • Four years of experience with T-SQL coding and tuning.
