WHAT IS ON OFFER

Alfred H Knight has an exciting opportunity for a Business Development Manager - Coal and Coke to join the team in Johannesburg. This individual will be responsible for the effective sales and marketing of the Coal and Coke competencies and capabilities to the South African inland coal mines, traders and industries. The individual will use an established client database and a new network of contacts to ensure a strong sales pipeline is developed for growth and profitability. Demonstrate a strong conversion rate of leads into sales and long-term contracts. Be responsible for the development and execution of marketing and sales strategies for the inland markets. This individual will also engage with industry professionals at industry events and conferences and work closely with respective Coal and Coke Marketing and Commercial Teams on any opportunities in South Africa. The role involves extensive travel into the inland coal and coke mining landscape to establish the Coal and Coke business in and across South Africa.

To be successful at Alfred H Knight the incumbent will need to display the following:

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND WORK EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Market strategy and growth
  • Lead generation and sales

  • Commercial leadership and reporting
  • Technical and operational coordination
  • Reporting and administration
  • Undertake ad-hoc projects and other duties of an appropriate nature in consultation with the Energy Services Lead

Required Competencies

  • Strong understanding of the mining and mineral (coal & coke) exploration industry
  • Knowledge of onsite coal laboratory processes and analytical techniques
  • Strong understanding of ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation requirements
  • Strong understanding of the coal mining value chain from pit to port
  • Strong commercial and strategic skills including market analysis, client relationship management, contract negotiation, and the ability to identify and develop new business opportunities
  • Excellent communication, presentation and networking skills are essential to engage with mining companies and coal industry professionals and stakeholders
  • Results-driven, proactive, customer focused, ability to manage high-value accounts, build long-term partnerships
  • Understanding of coal sampling, coal sample preparation and analytical methodologies
  • Work collaboratively with laboratory teams to deliver solutions that meet client and business objectives
  • Computer literacy (including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and working knowledge on LIMS)
  • Proficiency in English (read, write and speak)

Required Qualifications

  • Grade 12 with Mathematics and Science
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Mining Engineering or related scientific/technical discipline
  • Business qualification (MBA or Sales certification)will be an added advantage

Required work experience

  • Minimum 5-8 years’ experience in a coal or mineral laboratory environment
  • Experience in business development or sales within the mining or laboratory services sector; ideally with experience in selling to mining companies and traders

Travel

  • The incumbent must have the ability to travel frequently across Southern Africa
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License
