Job Description
Vedder's Chicago office is looking for a Business Development Manager. The Business Development Manager is responsible for individual, practice group, and firmwide programs designed to help the Firm’s attorneys identify and capitalize on high-potential business development opportunities. The Business Development Manager will work one-on-one with attorneys designated by Firm leadership to develop systematic, measurable approaches for expanding their professional networks and growing their practices. The Business Development Manager will also help to create group training programs and workshops to be used for professional development for various practices and across the Firm.
As the Business Development Manager, your duties will include but not be limited to:
- Work with the Chief Business Development Officer and Firm management on the rollout of business development training and coaching initiatives
- Work with the Chief Business Development Officer to develop metrics that measure the effectiveness and return on investment (ROI) of business development initiatives and participant engagement
- Design coaching programs and workshops for groups (i.e., associates, shareholders, practice leaders)
- For Lawyers selected for one-on-one coaching:
- Help attorneys handle pitch opportunities as individuals and within the context of a team
- Help attorneys clarify high-priority, actionable business development goals and create practical plans to achieve them
- Help attorneys target prospective clients and prospect-rich environments (associations, boards, charitable organizations, etc.)
- Help attorneys with presentation and pitch negotiation skills
- Work with practice leaders to identify cross-selling, cross-helping, and client expansion opportunities across practices
- Partner with the Chief Business Development Officer, Marketing team, and Firm leadership to evaluate, prioritize, and respond to RFP opportunities
- The Business Development Manager will create and implement multifaceted strategies that enhance attorney business development effectiveness
- The position offers significant responsibility and autonomy for individuals who demonstrate sound judgment, strategic thinking, diplomacy, and the ability to work effectively with stakeholders at all levels of the Firm
Skills & Competencies:
- Experience conducting competitive intelligence and market research analysis is required
- Experience utilizing business development and market intelligence platforms such as LinkedIn, Bloomberg, Capital IQ, Monitor Suite, and similar tools is preferred
Qualifications & Required Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree Required
- Minimum 10 years of business development, executive coaching, client development, or related experience within a professional services environment is required
- Position also requires the ability to work under pressure to meet strict deadlines.
Computer Skills:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be proficient in the following software:
- Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams)
- Familiarity with CRM and similar platforms is preferred
Compensation Range: $125,000/yr. to $150,000/yr.
