Summary

The City of Jefferson is now accepting applications for a Bus Driver/Communications Operator for JeffTran. This position acts as the main communication link between drivers, the public, supervisors and passengers. Monitors and/or schedules the provision of various transportation services through the coordination of drivers, routes and equipment and maintains related records. Fills in as a bus driver as needed. Provides assistance and training to new drivers in obtaining an appropriate CDL and performs other support functions as necessary.

Examples of duties

Schedules daily paratransit and other operations through coordination of drivers and equipment, including creating daily pickup schedules, dispatching drivers in response to handiwheels client requests, tracking and logging drivers' status calls.

Maintains records of paratransit fares and passes sold by drivers, issues/sells paratransit passes to handiwheel drivers, reconciles passes sold and paratransit fares received with daily drivers reports and prepares bank deposits, issues/sells various regular route passes and change to drivers.

Fills in as a driver on all types of transportation service provided on a regular basis.

Receives telephone inquiries and requests from the public, answers questions regarding schedules and services, provides and explains various forms and applications, directs and notifies supervisors of complaints and other service problems, generally responds to and appropriately directs all public and passenger inquiries.

Continuously updates and records types of service requested and provided in the paratransit scheduling and client data base (Medicaid waiver, non-emergency medical trips, missed trips, same day return calls, previous day requests for service, changes in client address, phone number and status in client file master, etc.)

Enters drivers' daily passenger count, daily mileage, fuel usage, vehicle fluids usage and evaluates this information for discrepancies.

Prepares routing for special charter trips and other miscellaneous projects as needed.

Occasionally fills in as a supervisor and performs some supervisory functions.

Qualifications

Requires a high school diploma or equivalent; and a MO Class B CDL with passenger endorsement within two weeks of hire, necessary training provided.

Physical: Ability to communicate clearly by radio, telephone and in person; ability to sit for extend periods while operating a transit bus; ability to work in extreme weather conditions; ability to aid disabled passengers and to lift or drag passengers to safety in case of an emergency; ability to assist clients with packages on and off the bus when providing paratransit transportation; ability to push and maneuver wheelchairs and user (up to 600 pounds combined weight) on and off a wheelchair lift and into tie down position on the bus; ability to bend, stoop and reach while securing wheelchair.

Mental: Ability to read and comprehend training materials, periodicals, instruction manuals, and similar materials; ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; ability to concentrate and be productive in working with written instructions and turning out miscellaneous reports, memos, etc.; Ability to concentrate for extended periods of time while dispatching or operating a transit bus on various routes; ability to count and accurately record passenger trips; ability to tell time and use to arrive and depart from various locations on routes at scheduled times; ability to handle stressful situations in a clam manner; ability to think quickly and react.

Supplemental information

Hiring is dependent on successful completion of DOT Physical, pre-employment drug screening, criminal history, and drivers license's check.

JeffTran operates Monday - Friday, 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
