TITLE: Bus Driver Trainee
CLASSIFICATION: Classified Non-Exempt � Classified Hourly Salary Schedule
REPORTS TO: Director of Transportation
The school bus driver trainee will undergo training to transport children for school purposes in a safe and efficient manner under the supervision and guidance of qualified personnel.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Learn to obey all traffic laws, Arizona Department of Transportation rules, Roosevelt School District policies and procedures, and mandatory safety regulations for school buses under the supervision of a certified trainer.
2. Assist in transporting only authorized students on assigned routes, to and from school, and/or on field trips or special events as part of supervised training.
3. Participate in mandatory safety inspections under supervision, learning to inspect the bus for mechanical defects and properly document issues using the Vehicle Check List and Maintenance Log. Notify proper authorities of any mechanical failure during training.
4. Practice maintaining bus cleanliness both inside and outside according to Roosevelt School District procedures. Learn to check the bus after each run for lost items and/or damage under supervision.
5. Develop skills to maintain discipline and supervision while transporting students, reporting incidents to appropriate authorities. Learn to discharge students only at authorized stops during training.
6. Assist in educating students about safety requirements as part of training.
7. Observe and participate in the process of reporting accidents verbally and in writing within the required time frame.
8. Attend and actively participate in in-service meetings and training sessions.
9. Perform other job-related duties as assigned by supervising personnel during training.
EDUCATION: High school diploma or equivalency preferred; not required.
LICENSES OR CERTIFICATIONS:
• Arizona Driver's License
• Department of Transportation Physical
EXPERIENCE: None required; training will be provided.
SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES:
• Must be a minimum of 21 years old.
• Willingness to obtain an Arizona School Bus Driver Certificate with passenger endorsement and Class B CDL Arizona Driver's License through district-provided training.
• Must maintain a good driving record and commit to completing bus driver school and training.
• Ability to learn and comply with safety procedures.
• Willingness to develop the ability to work effectively with students, teachers, parents, and administrators.
• Must be physically able to bend, climb, stoop, kneel, lift 60 pounds, and reach to assist students or handle emergencies.
• Must demonstrate a command of the English language to communicate effectively during training.
WORKING CONDITIONS: The working environment involves training in a school bus setting, exposure to vehicular traffic, bus fumes and odors, and bus noise and vibration, in all weather extremes.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Nine-month year, Classified Hourly Salary Schedule, Employee benefits in accordance with Board policies.
EVALUATION: Performance to be evaluated in accordance with Board policy on evaluation of classified staff and progress during training.
