Job Description

San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance is an international, nonprofit conservation organization with two front doors: the San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. We integrate wildlife health and care, science, and education to develop sustainable conservation solutions.

HOW YOU WILL IMPACT OUR MISSION
The Building & Grounds Supervisor oversees the cleaning and sanitizing of vehicles, buildings and grounds to assures the highest cleanliness and safety standards are met. This position reports to the Buildings & Grounds Manager.

WHAT YOU WILL DO
• Supervises all Building & Ground staff and associated vendors in the cleaning and sanitizing of buildings, grounds, vehicles, and other facilities.
• Manages all Building & Ground staff recruitment, onboarding. scheduling, training, engagement and performance management, including adherence to SDZWA policies.
• Tracks department operating budget, ensuring efficient labor scheduling and expense alignment with operational forecasts.
• Oversees park waste diversion, reduction and recycling programs, including battery recycling, post-consumer food waste, asset re-use, green waste and diversion metric reporting.
• Manages department work quality through routine inspections that ensure cleanliness, sanitation, sustainability, functional documentation and safety standards are met.
• Collaborates across departments to provide best-in-class custodial support for after-hours events and guest, team and wildlife care operations, including disinfection.

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
The ideal candidate will have the ability to work a flexible schedule including weekdays, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

JOB EXPERIENCE
• 1 year of lead or supervisory experience in a large organization's indoor and outdoor cleaning and sanitation program required.
• Experience working with labor unions preferred.
• Applicable experience in a large theme park, zoo or campus preferred.
• Applicable experience in a hospital, laboratory or volume retail environment preferred.

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS
• High School Diploma required
• Valid California Driver’s License required

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
• Knowledge of materials, equipment, and practices used in custodial care.
• Strong working knowledge of industry safety regulations.
• Able to operate moderately complex computer software programs.
• Demonstrated ability to work with diverse teams in an effective manner.
• Able to communicate effectively (verbal and written).

Initial hiring offers are typically made within the lower to mid portion of the range and are based on a combination of relevant experience, skills, qualifications, internal equity, and organizational considerations. Placement near the top of the range is generally reserved for individuals who demonstrate sustained performance, growth, and expanded responsibilities in the role over time.
