About the Position:

Building Services Technician - Student Centers

Support the daily operation, maintenance, and upkeep of Student Centers facilities by performing a wide range of building services, repair, and maintenance functions. This part-time, non-student position helps ensure that the Student Centers buildings and surrounding areas remain safe, functional, and welcoming for students, staff, and visitors. Responsibilities include performing skilled and semi-skilled maintenance work in areas such as carpentry, painting, plumbing, and general building repairs; operating hand, power, and shop tools; and assisting with preventative maintenance activities. Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, including during inclement weather, with primary responsibility for the Johnson Center, The Hub, and Student Union Building I, as well as support for facilities across the university. The position collaborates closely with Student Centers Building Services and Operations supervisors to provide consistent operational support during all hours of operation and to maintain adequate inventories of materials, parts, tools, and supplies necessary for efficient facility maintenance.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs general building maintenance, repair, and preventive maintenance across interiors, exteriors, furnishings, fixtures, and equipment to ensure safe, functional, and presentable facilities;
  • Completes carpentry work including installing, repairing, and replacing doors, hardware, flooring, walls, ceilings, cabinetry, shelving, and furniture;
  • Patches, finishes, and paints walls, ceilings, and other surfaces;
  • Installs, assembles, relocates, and secures fixtures, signage, whiteboards, televisions, artwork, and related equipment;
  • Conducts routine plumbing repairs such as unclogging drains, fixing leaks, and replacing fixtures;
  • Performs basic electrical maintenance, including replacing lamps, ballasts, switches, outlets, and lighting components;
  • Inspects facilities to identify maintenance issues and complete work orders promptly and professionally;
  • Assists with renovation projects, facility improvements, and minor construction activities;
  • Responds to urgent maintenance issues, emergencies, and seasonal/weather-related needs;
  • Maintains documentation of work, labor, and materials using CMMS and related systems;
  • Monitors and manages inventory of tools, supplies, equipment, and replacement parts; assist with receiving and distribution;
  • Safely operates vehicles, carts, ladders, lifts, hand tools, and power tools; performs routine maintenance on equipment;
  • Maintains clean, organized workspaces and report hazards, unsafe conditions, or damaged equipment;
  • Follows safety protocols, use PPE, and complies with university policies and regulatory requirements;
  • Supports sustainability, recycling, and resource conservation efforts;
  • Trains, mentors, and supervises student employees; assign and review work to ensure quality and safety compliance;
  • Provides coaching on maintenance skills, customer service, and professional conduct;
  • Identifies and communicates student employee performance or training needs;
  • Assists with event setup, furniture arrangement, equipment placement, and post-event restoration;
  • Coordinates maintenance activities with staff, vendors, and campus partners;
  • Communicates project status and facility needs;
  • Supports building operations, including opening/closing, readiness, and emergency response activities;
  • Delivers professional, responsive, and customer-focused service to campus stakeholders and event participants;
  • Supports meetings, events, and programs while maintaining facility appearance and readiness; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • Valid driver's license;
  • Knowledge of general maintenance method, equipment, and tools;
  • Detailed knowledge and experience of basic carpentry skills, methods and techniques;
  • Basic understanding of computer operation and MS Office software suite;
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and written;
  • Exercise independent judgment and initiative without close supervision;
  • Ability to work on ladders;
  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs; and
  • Ability to complete strenuous and sustained manual labor.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Detailed knowledge and proven 3+ years of experience in building maintenance and/or construction trades such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical.
