Job Description

The Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) in La Jolla, CA has an immediate career opening for a Building Maintenance Technician II. This opening is located at IDA’s Center for Communications Research in La Jolla, California (CCR-L). We are seeking a Building Maintenance Technician II to perform routine building and facility maintenance in CCRL, general repairs and, as needed, general custodial tasks in the SCIF; including interior and exterior conditions of walls, general carpentry, building lighting, plumbing, exterior grounds and parking lot. Oversees contract custodial staff to ensure timely and efficient service and monitors spare parts, expendable building/office supplies.

While it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range, a reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role is $51,084 - $81,735. Individual salary within this range will be commensurate with the incumbent’s experience and unique skills or qualifications.

Primary Responsibilities


1. Performs or supervises vendors performing maintenance of the exterior grounds, parking lot, and building/facility, which includes internal and external conditions of walls, general carpentry tasks, building lighting and plumbing repairs.

2. Prepares and assigns schedule of the contract custodial staff ensuring timely and efficient service to maximize productivity within security guidelines.

3. Monitors, maintains, and organizes spare parts and expendable building/office supplies in the stock room, pantries, restrooms and vending areas; keeps tools in good working order.

4. Performs, as needed outside of CCRL’s contracted custodial contract, general tasks in the secure SCIF area; may include cleaning windows; painting, vacuuming and dusting; sweeping, mopping, stripping and waxing tile floors; restrooms and open areas, carpet and upholstery; collecting and breaking down trash/recycling.

5. Recommends facilities maintenance improvements to management.

6. May respond to emergency call-backs and related situations that require immediate attention, as necessary.

7. May move and store furniture, equipment and physical facility property deliveries.

8. May assist in the corrective maintenance or repairs of facility/HVAC equipment.

9. Performs other work-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent and five years’ experience in general trades and contractual custodial staff.
• Some basic carpentry and plumbing background a plus.
• Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds alone; ability to climb ladders, work from heights and stand for long periods of time.
• Must possess a driver’s license.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Knowledge of OSHA, state and local safety practices and requirements a plus.
• Able to work outside of regular schedule due to emergency or related situations.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain TS/SCI clearance with polygraph. Active TS/SCI clearance with polygraph preferred.
