Building Control Officer – Fairlie / Remote work options available, South Canterbury
The BCO works within the wider Building Control Team and plays a key part in ensuring compliance with the Building Act 2004, NZ Building Code and other relevant legislation as well as having a critical role in ensuring the Mackenzie District Council maintains its accreditation and operation as a Building Consent Authority.
As one of our BCO’s you will be responsible for carrying out the following activities:
· Processing and assessing building consent applications.
· Conducting inspections and certifying building work.
· Supporting compliance efforts, including Building Warrants of Fitness and enforcement activities.
· Assisting with the Council’s accreditation and regulatory responsibilities.
· Maintaining current competencies.

Just like Transformers, there’s more to this role than meets the eye or what’s outlined here. This is a full time, permanent role (40 hours per week) based out of our Fairlie office, however there is the ability to work remotely around work schedules when needed.
You’ll be someone who enjoys working with people and takes pride in providing great customer service. You’ll be comfortable dealing with a wide range of people and enquiries, and know how to communicate clearly and professionally, including when a situation might require a little extra patience or understanding.
You’ll also be organised, accurate and able to juggle different priorities throughout the day. While you’ll be part of a supportive team, you’ll be equally comfortable taking ownership of your work and getting on with things independently.
To be successful in the role of Building Control Officer, you will need:
· Minimum of three years’ work experience as a Building Control Officer in New Zealand.
· Diploma in Building Control Surveying, or other appropriately recognised Regulation 18 qualification.
· Hold current R1-R3, C1-C2, C1- C3 processing / inspections competencies. Refer to the salary breakdown below.
· A working knowledge of the New Zealand Building Act 2024, Building Regulations, Building Code, and inspection / consent processes.
· Demonstrated ability and previous experience with reading and interpreting design plans, Building Specifications, Compliance Schedule production and Specified System identification on site.
· An ability to implement and use guidance information in quality assurance procedure and policies documentation that form part of Council’s accreditation as Building Consent Authority.
· Previous Local Government work experience in the application of the NZ Building Act 2004 is advantageous.
· Full driver’s license is essential.
