About the Role

As a Building Consent Officer, you will be responsible for processing building consent applications in accordance with the Building Act, New Zealand Building Code, Council policies, and our accredited Building Consent Authority (BCA) Quality Assurance System.

In this role, you will be:

• Commercial processing of a wide variety of building consent applications including light industrial, school classrooms, fit-outs, retail and home businesses as well assisting the residential team, ensuring compliance with the New Zealand Building Code.

• Prepare schedules of specified systems and compliance schedules with accuracy and attention to detail.

• Collaborate closely with staff across the Building Unit. and wider Council departments such as planning, infrastructure, and compliance.

• Work within our Building Consent Authority (BCA) Quality Assurance System, ensuring adherence to accreditation standards and continuous improvement.

• Residential processing of applications include single household dwellings, multi-unit dwellings, outbuildings and alterations to existing buildings.

About You

• A recognised qualification that meets Regulation 18 of the Building Regulations (Accreditation of Building Consent Authorities).

  • Established competency under the National Competency Assessment Framework:

  • Commercial role: Minimum Commercial 1 competency, preferably Commercial 2

  • Residential role: Minimum Residential 1 competency, preferably Residential 2

• Strong working knowledge of the New Zealand Building Act, Building Code, and compliance pathways, including the ability to assess and apply alternative solutions.

• Excellent organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities effectively.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage positively and professionally with a wide range of stakeholders.

• A customer-focused approach, with a commitment to building and maintaining strong relationships across the building and development sectors.

• Proactive and collaborative problem-solver, with a professional and solutions-oriented mindset.
