Job Description

About Automated Logic

At Automated Logic, we've been developing and supporting intelligent building solutions that have helped customers, including small businesses to Fortune 500 corporations, operate their buildings more efficiently for over 40 years. Our products help reduce energy consumption, lower utility, operating and maintenance costs, and improve indoor air quality, occupant comfort, and productivity. Technology that supports the buildings and industry of today and tomorrow requires a wide range of talents and skill sets.

About this role:

Join a seasoned team delivering smart, energy-efficient building automation solutions across some of Indiana’s most established and diverse markets. As a Building Automation Hardware Engineer for Automated Logic Corporation, you will contribute to a well-developed regional operation serving commercial, institutional, healthcare, and government facilities throughout Indiana.

This role offers the stability of joining a high-performing team with deep roots in the Indiana market, where the focus is on delivering consistent, high-quality engineering outcomes across a steady portfolio of projects. You will work alongside experienced engineers and collaborate closely with software, graphics, project management, field operations, and installation teams to bring complex building automation systems to life.

In this role, you will report directly to the Branch Engineering Supervisor and be responsible for developing BAS hardware design packages, including equipment-level wiring schematics, control panel details, point schedules, controller and peripheral selection, network architecture, and supporting project documentation. The finished product will support software programming, graphics development, installation, commissioning, and project closeout.

This position is intended for an engineer who can independently execute standard BAS hardware engineering tasks and produce complete project designs while continuing to develop the broader technical expertise, judgment, and self-directed project ownership expected of a senior-level engineer.

This position offers a clear path for professional growth, with future opportunities in roles such as Senior Hardware Engineer, Software Engineer, Field Engineer, Systems Specialist, or other technical leadership positions.

Key Responsibilities:

Hardware Engineering

  • Develop BAS hardware design documentation including controller layouts, wiring diagrams, point schedules, control panel details, network risers, and supporting project documentation.
  • Select and apply controllers, sensors, actuators, relays, communication devices, and other BAS components based on project requirements and system performance objectives.
  • Interpret mechanical, electrical, and architectural construction documents to identify scope, control requirements, equipment details, and coordination needs.
  • Identify missing, unclear, or conflicting project information and ask pertinent questions through internal coordination, customer discussions, and Requests for Information (RFIs).
  • Apply project specifications, customer standards, and Automated Logic engineering standards to hardware design work.
  • Develop hardware designs that align with sequences of operation, installation requirements, commissioning needs, and overall system functionality.
  • Coordinate with software engineers, graphics engineers, project managers, and field personnel to ensure hardware designs support successful project execution.
  • Create and maintain accurate submittal documentation, incorporating project revisions, addenda, and field-directed changes.
  • Perform quality reviews of engineering deliverables prior to release to ensure completeness, accuracy, and compliance with project requirements.
  • Maintain clear communication and proactive expectation setting with supervisors and project teams.

Customer and Departmental Standards

  • Adhere to project requirements, company standards, customer standards, and applicable safety expectations in all aspects of design and documentation.
  • Produce organized, accurate, and professional engineering deliverables that support successful installation, programming, graphics, and commissioning.
  • Communicate technical questions, project risks, design concerns, and workload constraints in a timely manner.

Department Process Improvement

  • Follow established engineering processes and make suggestions for improvement as experience grows.
  • Support consistency in hardware engineering standards, templates, and design practices.
  • Participate in lessons learned and continuous improvement discussions.

Company Directives

  • Ensure all Automated Logic organizational safety and ethics standards are met.
  • Uphold a high regard for employee and subcontractor safety.
  • Exemplify the Carrier code of ethics in all professional conduct.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Working Arrangement: Hybrid – This position requires an average of two days per week on-site duties at project or branch locations, combined with the ability to work from home. On-site presence is determined by project needs, team collaboration, and customer requirements.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 4+ years of experience in HVAC or BAS controls.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, HVAC, building automation, or a related engineering field.
  • Five (5) or more years of experience in the building automation industry.
  • Strong understanding of electrical and mechanical building systems, including the application of sequences of operation for automated control systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical, electrical, and architectural construction documents.
  • Experience selecting and applying BAS controllers, sensors, peripherals, actuators, relays, and network devices for commercial building automation systems.
  • Familiarity with building automation communication protocols including BACnet, Modbus, SNMP, LON, and N2, as well as basic enterprise IP networking concepts.
  • Experience with Automated Logic hardware and engineering tools including EDS, Eikon, SiteBuilder, ViewBuilder, Microsoft Visio, and related platforms.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills, including the ability to independently execute standard hardware engineering tasks, identify missing project information, and develop complete, accurate BAS design packages.
