About the Role

Cognita, in partnership with Brighton College (Singapore), is seeking an inspirational and experienced Teacher of Mandarin to support the school from [start date] to [end date] on a maternity cover assignment. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the continued development of Mandarin provision across the school as Brighton College (Singapore) grows into one of the region’s leading all-through schools, offering education from Pre-Nursery to Year 13.

The Teacher of Mandarin will play an important role in delivering high-quality, engaging Mandarin lessons from Pre-Prep through to Year 9, across a range of year groups, ability levels and language pathways. The successful candidate will plan and deliver lessons that develop pupils’ confidence and competence in listening, speaking, reading and writing, while fostering a genuine interest in the Chinese language and culture. Lessons should be appropriately challenging, inclusive and responsive to pupils’ individual needs, ensuring that all pupils make strong progress from their starting points.

Beyond the classroom, the Teacher of Mandarin will contribute to the wider life of the Mandarin Department and the school. This will include supporting Chinese cultural events, enrichment activities, co-curricular opportunities and the development of pupils’ understanding of Chinese-speaking cultures. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with colleagues to maintain high standards of teaching and learning, contribute to assessment and reporting, and support positive communication with pupils and parents.

Through their role, the Teacher of Mandarin will make a valuable contribution to the continued development of Mandarin at Brighton College (Singapore), inspiring pupils to become confident communicators, enthusiastic language learners and culturally aware global citizens.

Key Responsibilities:

• Deliver high-quality Mandarin lessons from Pre-Prep through to Year 9, ensuring all pupils are engaged, appropriately challenged and supported to make excellent progress.
• Take responsibility for the teaching, progress and attainment of timetabled pupils across Pre-Prep, Prep and Senior School, adapting teaching to meet a wide range of ages, abilities and language backgrounds.
• Teach Mandarin across different language pathways and ability levels, including pupils learning Mandarin as a foreign, second or additional language, as appropriate to the school’s curriculum.
• Plan and deliver a coherent and engaging Mandarin curriculum that develops pupils’ listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, while fostering confidence and enjoyment in language learning.
• Differentiate effectively to meet the needs of pupils of different abilities, including providing appropriate challenge for more advanced and fluent speakers and targeted support for pupils requiring additional assistance.
• Contribute to the assessment, tracking and reporting of pupil progress, ensuring that assessment is accurate, constructive and timely and informs future teaching.
• Work collaboratively with the Mandarin Department to ensure consistency in curriculum planning, teaching approaches, assessment and expectations across year groups.
• Contribute to a rich and varied programme of Mandarin-related co-curricular and enrichment opportunities, including Chinese cultural activities, celebrations, competitions and events.
• Support and help organise Mandarin and Chinese cultural events that promote pupils’ understanding and appreciation of Chinese language and culture across the wider school community.
• Act as an outstanding classroom practitioner, modelling excellent teaching, high expectations, enthusiasm for language learning and a genuine passion for Chinese language and culture.
• Promote confidence, curiosity and a love of language learning, encouraging pupils to communicate effectively and develop their intercultural understanding.
• Work closely with the relevant Heads of School, class teachers, form tutors, EAL and AEN colleagues to support pupils’ individual learning needs and ensure appropriate pathways and interventions are in place.
• Contribute positively to the wider school community and, where required, support the school’s pastoral system and co-curricular programme.
• Maintain effective communication with parents and colleagues regarding pupils’ progress, achievement and learning needs.
• Uphold the highest standards of safeguarding and child protection.
• Demonstrate a strong commitment to continuous professional development, collaborative practice and reflective teaching.
• Undertake any other reasonable duties in support of the school’s mission, values and co-curricular programmes.
• Build positive and professional relationships with parents, providing clear and timely communication about pupils’ learning, progress, achievement and areas for development, and working in partnership with families to support pupils’ success in Mandarin.

Position Requirements:

• Qualified teacher with relevant teaching experience and expert knowledge of successfully delivering Mandarin as a Foreign Language, Mandarin as a Second Language and Mandarin as a First Language, across a range of age groups and ability levels.
• Experience of teaching Mandarin across Primary and/or Secondary phases, with the flexibility to teach from Pre-Prep through to Year 9. (4years old- 15years old)
• Proven experience of successfully delivering high-quality Mandarin lessons, with the ability to develop pupils’ listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.
• Experience of working with pupils from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, with the ability to differentiate effectively and meet a wide range of learning needs.
• International experience (preferred but not essential).
• A genuine passion for Mandarin language and Chinese culture, with the ability to inspire pupils and foster enthusiasm for language learning.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Mandarin teaching or education
