Job Description
We are looking for an experienced BrightScript / Roku Developer to build and maintain high-quality applications for the Roku platform. The ideal candidate should have strong hands-on experience with BrightScript, SceneGraph, Roku SDK, video streaming, and Connected TV application development.
The role requires a strong understanding of TV-first user experiences, media playback, performance optimization, remote navigation, and Roku certification requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain Roku applications using BrightScript and SceneGraph.
- Build reusable SceneGraph components for TV-based user interfaces.
- Integrate Roku applications with REST APIs and backend services.
- Implement and optimize HLS / DASH video playback for live and on-demand content.
- Integrate DRM, subtitles, multiple audio tracks, and adaptive bitrate streaming where required.
- Implement Roku-specific capabilities including:
- Deep linking
- Roku Pay
- Roku Advertising Framework (RAF)
- Device capability detection
- Local storage and registry
- Build smooth remote-control navigation and focus management.
- Optimize application startup time, memory usage, rendering performance, and playback reliability.
- Debug application, network, DRM, and playback issues across different Roku devices.
- Implement analytics and telemetry for application and playback events.
- Develop automated tests and support device-level QA.
- Ensure applications meet Roku certification and publishing requirements.
- Collaborate with backend, video, product, design, QA, and DevOps teams.
- Participate in code reviews and define Roku development best practices.
Requirements
- 4+ years of software development experience, with strong experience in Connected TV or media applications.
- Hands-on experience with BrightScript.
- Strong experience with Roku SceneGraph.
- Experience working with the Roku SDK and Developer Dashboard.
- Strong understanding of TV UI patterns and focus-based remote navigation.
- Experience consuming REST APIs and handling JSON.
- Hands-on experience with video streaming technologies such as:
- HLS
- MPEG-DASH
- Adaptive bitrate streaming
- Understanding of video playback lifecycle, buffering, seeking, and error handling.
- Experience debugging applications on physical Roku devices using Developer Mode and sideloading.
- Understanding of memory and performance constraints on Connected TV devices.
- Good knowledge of Git and modern software development practices.
