The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking a Bridge Maintenance Specialist 2 to perform journey-level bridge maintenance, repair, and operational work on more than 1,300 bridges throughout the Northwest Region. Under the direction of a Bridge Maintenance Specialist Lead or Maintenance Specialist 5, this position plays a critical role in preserving transportation infrastructure that supports safe and reliable travel. The incumbent performs skilled maintenance activities while prioritizing safety for employees, coworkers, and the traveling public. This position also helps foster a respectful, inclusive, and collaborative work environment that reflects WSDOT’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

What to Expect

The typical schedule is Monday through Thursday or Tuesday through Friday, 40 hours per week, working four 10-hour shifts from 5:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Schedule and work hours may vary based on operational needs and may include day, night, weekend, and holiday shifts.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Bridge Maintenance Specialist 2 will:

  • Perform journey-level maintenance, repair, and preservation work on bridges, tunnels, and related transportation structures.
  • Repair and maintain structural and non-structural bridge components, including expansion joints, bridge rails, catwalks, decks, steel elements, and concrete features.
  • Restore and replace timber bridge components such as caps, piles, and stringers.
  • Remove logs, debris, and other obstructions from bridge piers and critical infrastructure components.
  • Fabricate steel and aluminum components using appropriate tools, equipment, and construction techniques.
  • Operate specialized equipment and vehicles, including cranes, Under Bridge Inspection Trucks (UBIT), Truck Mounted Attenuators (TMA), and trucks up to 80,000 pounds GVW.
  • Utilize power, air, and hand tools to support maintenance, repair, and construction activities.
  • Implement traffic control measures, including flagging operations, lane closures, road closures, and detours, while maintaining compliance with established safety standards and procedures.

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required

  • Mechanical Aptitude: Significant knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Mathematical Reasoning: Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications.
  • Building and Construction: Knowledge and understanding of structural systems such as concrete, steel, and wood, which includes the application of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of bridges, or other structures such as highways and buildings.
  • Engineering and Technical Application: Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and the ability to inspect equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects.
  • Communication and Information Sharing: Providing information to supervisors, co-workers, and subordinates by telephone, in written form, e-mail, or in person.
  • Equipment and Vehicle Operation: Running, maneuvering, navigating, or driving vehicles or mechanized equipment, such as forklifts, passenger vehicles, or watercraft.
  • External Communication and Customer Service: Communicating with people outside the organization, representing the organization to customers, the public, government, and other external sources. This information can be exchanged in person, in writing, by telephone, or by e-mail.
  • Active Listening: Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.

In addition to the above, the following are also required

  • Class A CDL, N tank endorsement, without restrictions E for no manual transmission and L for air brake restriction, or ability to get one within 6 months of employment.
  • A valid driver’s license and the ability to operate state-owned vehicles.
  • Ability to traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain.
  • Ability to maneuver and transport various materials and/or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work at elevated heights above land or water and from catwalks, platforms, and specialized equipment.
  • Ability to work day, night, weekend, and holiday shifts as required to support operational and emergency response needs.

  • The salary range listed includes the 2% general wage increase, effective on July 1, 2026.
  • The salary listed includes the legislatively approved 5% King County salary premium and the 10% Group C assignment pay.
  • This position is not eligible for remote work.
  • Work is performed primarily outdoors in all weather conditions, including rain, wind, heat, cold, and other inclement weather, during both daytime and nighttime hours. Duties are physically demanding and frequently occur adjacent to high-volume, high-speed traffic, requiring work from both stationary and moving traffic control platforms. The position requires working at ground level, in confined spaces, and at elevated heights exceeding 100 feet from catwalks, Under Bridge Inspection Trucks (UBITs), suspended platforms, and other structures over land or water. Duties require balancing, bending, twisting, reaching, and maneuvering in tight spaces on vehicles, equipment, and bridge structures. Exposure to hazardous conditions and materials may include gasoline, diesel fuel, solvents, oils, lubricants, paints, cleaners, airborne contaminants, biohazardous materials, chemical waste, and other workplace hazards.
