Boston Parks & Recreation's youth recreation series and events improve lives and contribute to economic balance by providing convenient, free, quality, instructional, and team-building programs to underserved and economically disadvantaged communities. Serving various demographics, including at-risk populations and children whose families cannot afford summer sports camps, leagues, or sports-specific programs, these events and activities offer a vital opportunity to bring safe, enriching programs to parks in densely populated areas.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

The Junior Sports Specialist position at the East Boston Sports Center is a valuable opportunity for youth employees to gain hands-on experience in recreation, leadership, and teamwork. As part of the team, Junior Sports Specialists assist the Supervisor in various aspects of the program to ensure its smooth operation and the safety and enjoyment of all participants. Key responsibilities include: - Assisting with Children: Supporting and guiding children during program activities, offering help when needed to ensure everyone is engaged and safe. - Following Directions: Junior Sports Specialists must be able to follow instructions from supervisors and senior staff to ensure the program runs effectively. - One-on-One Support: Some specialists may be assigned to work closely with a specific child throughout the day, providing individualized support to meet their needs. - Supporting Counselors: Helping other counselors with tasks or children who may need extra assistance during the program. - Training and Meetings: Attending required meetings and training sessions to develop skills and stay informed about program guidelines and safety procedures. - Swimming Participation: If applicable, participating in swimming activities to support water-based programs or ensure safety. - Cleanup: Assisting in cleaning up the program area at the end of the day to maintain a safe and organized environment. - Other Duties: Supporting the team with any additional tasks as assigned by counselors or supervisors to ensure the program runs smoothly. This role offers youth employees the chance to develop essential skills such as responsibility, teamwork, communication, and leadership while making a positive impact in their community.

The Ideal Candidate for this Job

The Junior Sports Specialist position at the East Boston Sports Center requires the following qualifications: - Age Requirement: Applicants must be between 15 and 18 years of age to be eligible for the role. - Desire to Work with Children: Candidates must have a genuine interest and enthusiasm for working with children, including both able-bodied and disabled youth, fostering an inclusive and supportive environment. - Responsibility: The role requires a responsible individual who can handle various tasks and situations with maturity. - Previous Experience: Previous experience in volunteering or participating in human service programs is preferred, as it demonstrates a commitment to helping others and an understanding of working in a community-focused setting.
