You'll be responsible for operating, maintaining, and repairing sophisticated boiler systems and mechanical equipment that provide heating, hot water, and steam to academic buildings, residence halls, laboratories, and dining facilities. This position demands technical expertise, regulatory compliance, and a strong service orientation to ensure uninterrupted comfort and safety for thousands of students, faculty, and staff. Your work directly supports the academic mission by maintaining reliable infrastructure that enables learning, research, and campus life to thrive year-round.

What your day-to-day will look like:

  • Operate and monitor high and low-pressure boiler systems across campus facilities, performing daily inspections of burners, controls, water levels, pressure gauges, and safety devices to ensure optimal performance

  • Execute preventive maintenance on boilers, pumps, valves, steam distribution systems, condensate return equipment, and water treatment systems while monitoring water chemistry to prevent scale and corrosion

  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and control system issues, replacing defective components such as pumps, motors, valves, steam traps, and sensors with minimal disruption to campus operations

  • Maintain compliance with local, state, and federal regulations including OSHA standards, performing safety inspections and testing of relief valves, low-water cutoffs, and flame safeguard controls

  • Document all maintenance activities, safety tests, and operational readings in computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and maintain accurate logs for regulatory reporting

  • Coordinate maintenance activities with facilities teams and academic departments around class schedules, campus events, and seasonal transitions to support the academic calendar

  • Respond to emergency situations and participate in on-call rotation to provide 24/7 support for critical heating and steam systems serving campus buildings

Required Qualifications:

  • Valid Boiler Operator License (class/grade as required by jurisdiction) with ability to maintain required certifications

  • 1 to 2 years of hands-on experience operating and maintaining commercial or institutional boiler systems in high-demand environments

  • This role falls under Local Union 559. Candidates must be current members or eligible to join the union within 90 days of hire.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of boiler controls, combustion principles, water treatment chemistry, and steam distribution systems

  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, P&IDs, schematics, and mechanical drawings

  • Computer proficiency for documentation, work order systems, energy management platforms, and CMMS applications

  • Strong communication and coordination skills for working effectively with diverse campus stakeholders including facilities teams, academic departments, and administrators

  • Physical capability to work in mechanical rooms and boiler rooms with exposure to heat and noise, climb ladders, walk significant distances between buildings, and lift up to 50 pounds

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Technical certification in HVAC, mechanical systems, or related trades disciplines

  • EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification or equivalent environmental compliance credentials

  • Experience with Building Automation Systems (BAS), energy management systems, or campus-wide utility monitoring platforms

  • Welding, pipefitting, or fabrication skills applicable to steam and heating system repairs

  • Previous experience in higher education, healthcare, or other 24/7 institutional environments requiring continuous operations

  • Familiarity with combined heat and power (CHP) systems, district energy plants, or central utility operations

  • Track record supporting energy conservation initiatives and campus sustainability programs
