As the Scientific Information Solutions Division of the American Chemical Society, CAS manages the largest curated reservoir of scientific knowledge, and for 111 years, has helped innovators mine, assess and apply that information to keep businesses thriving. The CAS team is global, diverse, endlessly curious and strives to make actionable scientific insights accessible to innovators worldwide.

CAS is currently seeking a Applied GenAI Data Scientist Technical Manager. This position will be located in our headquarters in Columbus, Ohio.

This is a senior individual contributor role that focuses on translating emerging generative AI techniques into reliable, scalable, and responsible solutions that support CAS products, workflows, and internal teams. The ideal candidate combines strong hands-on technical skills with the ability to work closely with product managers, domain experts, engineers, and stakeholders across the organization. Success in this role requires comfort operating in ambiguity, a collaborative mindset, and a commitment to high-quality, production-grade systems appropriate for CAS’s mission and reputation.

Job Accountabilities:

  • Design, build, and deploy production-grade generative AI solutions that support CAS products and internal platforms, including retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), agent-based workflows, and domain-specific language applications.
  • Partner with product, scientific, and engineering teams to identify high-value use cases and translate business and research needs into robust technical solutions.
  • Develop and maintain evaluation frameworks for GenAI systems, emphasizing accuracy, reliability, explainability, and continuous improvement.
  • Implement and optimize GenAI pipelines at scale, including prompt engineering, model orchestration, fine-tuning where appropriate, and system performance optimization.
  • Contribute to architectural decisions and best practices for responsible and secure use of large language models within an enterprise environment.
  • Communicate technical concepts and results clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences, supporting informed decision-making across CAS.
  • Stay current with advances in generative AI and applied machine learning, assessing their relevance and applicability to CAS’s scientific and information-driven context.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, or a related quantitative or scientific discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 12+ years of progressive professional experience in applied machine learning, data science, or software engineering, with demonstrated delivery of production systems.
  • Advanced proficiency and substantial hands-on experience building generative AI applications, including RAG, multi-agent systems, text-to-SQL, or similar patterns.
  • Strong programming skills in Python (or similar language), with experience using common ML and data science libraries (such as pandas, scikit-learn, and PyTorch in Python).
  • Experience deploying and operating production systems in at least one cloud environment (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
  • Proven ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams and navigate complex organizational environments.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical topics clearly and respectfully.

Desired, but not required:

  • Graduate degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, or a related field.
  • Experience with GenAI frameworks and tooling such as Hugging Face, LangChain, DSPy, or equivalent platforms.
  • Prior experience developing internal platforms or customer-facing tools in regulated or high-trust domains.
  • Familiarity with responsible AI practices, model risk assessment, and enterprise governance considerations.
  • Background in scientific, technical, or information-intensive domains.

CAS offers a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package, including a generous vacation plan, medical, dental, vision insurance plans, and employee savings and retirement plans.
