Position Summary
The Medical Laboratory Technologist performs routine and advanced laboratory testing in support of an invasive, non-invasive, and interventional cardiovascular practice. This position performs testing according to established procedures, operates laboratory equipment, evaluates testing methodologies, maintains accurate documentation, and provides day-to-day technical support and guidance to laboratory staff.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Performs routine and complex laboratory tests and analyses on patient specimens in accordance with established testing procedures.
Operates manual and automated laboratory equipment and performs required quality control procedures.
Reviews, evaluates, and follows established laboratory testing procedures and methodologies.
Assists with evaluating new testing procedures, methods, and equipment as needed.
Accurately records, verifies, and releases laboratory test results in accordance with established procedures.
Provides day-to-day technical guidance and support to laboratory staff and assists with assigning work based on department needs.
Helps coordinate and prioritize departmental workload to ensure appropriate coverage and timely completion of testing.
Communicates laboratory workflow issues, operational concerns, and employee performance matters to the appropriate supervisor.
Assists with training and onboarding new laboratory employees and provides ongoing guidance related to laboratory procedures.
Maintains accurate and complete documentation in accordance with applicable laboratory, medical record, HIPAA, and organizational requirements.
Maintains patient confidentiality and complies with HIPAA privacy and security requirements.
Works collaboratively with physicians, clinical staff, laboratory personnel, patients, and other internal and external stakeholders.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
Current certification/registration as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Medical Technologist (MT) through an appropriately recognized national certification organization, such as ASCP, as applicable to the position.
Current Illinois licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist, if required for the duties performed.
Ability to perform laboratory testing accurately and efficiently while following established procedures and quality standards.
Ability to operate and troubleshoot laboratory equipment and maintain accurate documentation.
Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
