The Biology Lab Coordinator supports biology laboratory courses by teaching two lab sections per semester, providing emergency instructional coverage, and ensuring continuity of lab delivery. The role manages laboratory operations for Microbiology, Anatomy, and Physiology, including equipment stewardship, safety procedures, and centralized ordering and inventory management. The Coordinator standardizes Canvas laboratory shells and supervises undergraduate lab workers.

Examples of duties

  • Supervise instructional staff, adjunct faculty, and student laboratory assistants in the preparation, setup, and breakdown of instructional biology laboratories; coordinate with faculty to ensure timely availability of instructional materials and equipment.
  • Assist faculty in the development, implementation, and assessment of laboratory curricular outcomes; oversee consistent delivery of laboratory instruction across sections and teach selected laboratory sections within area of specialization.
  • Maintain instructional laboratories, preparation areas, and associated facilities, ensuring proper use, organization, and functionality by faculty, students, and staff.
  • Coordinate procurement of laboratory supplies and equipment, manage and update inventory systems, maintain vendor relationships, and oversee maintenance and minor repair of laboratory equipment; serve as departmental liaison with Facilities and external vendors.
  • Coordinate with divisional leadership on departmental purchasing and maintenance expenditures; prepare and maintain supporting documentation, including purchase records, vendor contracts, inventories, and budget reports.
  • Ensure compliance with laboratory safety and environmental health regulations in coordination with divisional safety personnel; maintain and update safety procedures, records, and training related to biological and laboratory safety.
  • Hire, train, schedule, and supervise student laboratory assistants; provide training in laboratory safety, equipment handling, and standardized preparation procedures, approve student employee timesheets, and other duties as assigned.

  • Master’s degree in Biology or a closely related natural or biological science; candidates with relevant graduate coursework and/or equivalent professional laboratory experience may be considered.
  • Demonstrated experience in laboratory instruction, laboratory operations, or laboratory coordination.
  • Proficiency in Windows-based computer environments and Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills; demonstrated organizational, interpersonal, and time-management abilities.

  • Ability to multitask, meet deadlines, work independently, and prioritize work with attention to detail.

  • Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students in a professional, courteous, and tactful manner.

  • Ability to safely lift, move, and handle laboratory materials and equipment.

  • Willingness to work occasional evening hours as required by laboratory scheduling.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in an educational or higher education setting.

  • Higher education teaching experience, particularly in laboratory courses.

  • Familiarity with institutional administrative systems such as Self-Service and Colleague.
