POSITION:               Biologist III
SALARY:                   $ 27.16 - 42.98, per hour
REPORTS TO:        Salmon Reintroduction Division Senior Manager
LOCATION:               Nespelem, WA
Basic Functions:      This is a Non-Exempt position.    Gathers and analyzes a variety of data on Colville Confederated Tribes Reservation lakes and streams. Primarily, this position will be responsible for implementing creel surveys and analysis, organizing and conducting public outreach events, performing laboratory work related to fish aging and stock identification, and preparing technical reports.

QualificationsMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Training:
- Biologist I Requires: A Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, wildlife, natural resources science, or aquatic
- sciences in fisheries and habitat research. Transcript required.
- Biologist II: A Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited college or university in fisheries, natural resources science, or environmental science AND 36 months’ experience at the Biologist I or equivalent level related to fish management, conservation, and/or research; OR A Master’s Degree from a regionally accredited college or university in the applicable science AND 12 months’ experience at the Biologist I or equivalent level related to fish management, conservation, and/ or research. Transcript required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Requires knowledge of methods and practices of fisheries management techniques.
- Requires knowledge of environmental regulation principles and procedures as they apply to fish, wildlife or habitat, biological research, fish culture, and fish management.
- Requires knowledge of standard laboratory and field methods and statistical data processing relating to fisheries; including fish species, their habits and life histories, factors influencing the capacity of water bodies to sustain fish populations; and fishing regulations.
- Requires knowledge of the legal concept of Tribal sovereignty and the interplay of Tribal sovereignty with state and federal fish and wildlife laws, regulations and administrative actions.
- Requires excellent verbal and written communication skills and be able to communicate effectively with a wide variety of stakeholders with diverse backgrounds and interests.
- Requires work history that reflects excellent attendance.
- Requires the ability to write and speak clearly and effectively, including the ability to synthesize research findings and formulate fish management recommendations for a variety of audiences.
- Requires the ability to organize, schedule, and implement fish research or management studies, including the ability to coordinate, lead or supervise staff in performing a variety of outdoor work tasks.
- Requires the ability to apply research and statistical methods and techniques to project or programs including the use of computers for data analysis and reporting.
- Requires the ability to analyze environmental information, prepare written reports and recommendations, deliver oral presentations.
- Requires the ability to plan and carry out complex tasks to completion while leading a team, working independently or
- serving as a member of a project or interdisciplinary team.
- Requires the ability to build long term positive and professional working relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders and
- coworkers including project partners at UCUT, the Colville Business Council, other department managers, departmental employees, tribal members, funding agency representatives, regulatory agency representatives and other government and tribal entities.
- Requires the ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.
- Requires the ability to carry out tasks to completion and meeting program deadlines.
- Requires the ability to define research problems and determine extent and type of information needed.
- Requires the ability to design and implement experimental research studies.

- Requires the ability to operate and maintain work boats, including electrofishing boats, drift boats, and landing craft style boats up to 26 ft in length, preferred.
- Requires the ability to effectively in a multi-cultural environment as a team member in a pleasant and efficient manner.
- Requires the ability to function indoors in an office environment and outdoors environments engaged in work of a moderately active nature.
- Requires the ability to work in an office setting, attending meetings, perform site visits and conduct fieldwork.
- Requires sufficient hand-eye-arm coordination to use a keyboard and operate a variety of general office equipment.
- Requires good physical condition to be able to work and hike in inclement weather conditions of over variable and rugged terrain when needed.
- Requires the ability to walk moderate distances over varying terrain including the ability to bend, stoop, reach, pull,
- and climb.
- Requires the ability to lift up to and carry up to 40 lbs. over uneven terrain.
- Requires the ability to drive light duty trucks, tow and disconnect trailers.
- Requires the ability safely tow, launch, and operate boats.
- Requires the ability to work safely on boats, barges, catwalks and gangways. Requires the ability to work around cold, deep, swift moving water, and in inclement weather conditions.
- Requires visual acuity to read words and numbers.
- Requires auditory ability to carry on conversations over the phone and in person.
- Requires the ability to work a variable schedule, including: evenings, early mornings, holidays, and weekends as the work dictates.
- Requires the ability to travel for work projects, meetings, training and conference participation as necessary.
- Requires ability to drive in adverse weather conditions.
Note: Pursuant to Tribal Policy, if this position is safety sensitive it is subject to pre-employment drug testing. In addition, this position is subject to reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug testing.

If required of this position, you must possess and maintain a valid Washington State driver’s license and be eligible for the Tribes’ Vehicle Insurance.  In addition, this position may be subject to pre-employment background clearances.  If applicable, these clearances must be maintained throughout employment.
