Other requirements: You will have completed a minimum of 2 years of your undergraduate degree but will not have graduated at the start of your placement. You must be enrolled at a UK (United Kingdom) or ROI (Republic of Ireland) University for the duration of your placement.

The Roles (9 available)

Role 1 – Human Biology and Omics Technologies

Degree Requirements: BSc in degrees such as Biomedical Genetics, Biomedical Sciences, Genetics, Medical Genetics, Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, Biotechnology, Natural Sciences, Pharmacology, Biology, Medical Biology, Bioinformatics, Immunology, Physiology, Microbiology, Computational Biology

Overview of the Department

Roles within the Human Biology and Omics Technologies department comprise of several disciplines that provide scientific knowledge required to develop translational models and assays to enable the discovery and validation of novel therapeutic targets, through gaining a deeper understanding of causal biology and mechanisms. The role will involve advanced cell culture, genome editing, high content imaging, automation, functional assays, flow cytometry, ELISAs and omics.

Key Placement Learnings

• Development of advanced humanized cellular models with microfluidics such as organ-on-a-chip platforms and organoids.
• Application of high-throughput genomic & transcriptomic approaches to enable the discovery and validation of potential new therapeutic targets.
• Genome editing in primary human cell models of diseases with multitude functional readouts for target identification and validation.
• Development of high content imaging and automation processes to support specialist imaging assays for various projects within Target Validation.
• Development of Human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived models and implementation of genome editing pipelines

Role 2: Discovery Biology and Modality Technologies (DBMT)

Degree Requirements: Life / medical science degrees including Biology, Biomedical Science, Pharmacology, Biochemistry, Neuroscience, Cell biology and equivalent.

Overview of the Department

The primary responsibility of the Discovery Biology and Screening department is to deliver high quality, biologically relevant pre-clinical leads for all GSK therapeutic areas, by employing a combination of scientific tools and methodologies, including but not limited to assay development, high throughput screening, compound profiling, and mechanism of action studies.

Key Placement Learnings

• Individual project driven by student, generating data to contribute to program progression or the implementation of new technologies.
• Analyse data to determine the next experimental steps.
• Screening against safety liabilities for progression of multiple programs and reducing attrition.
• Regular journal clubs to learn how to analyse and write journal articles.
• Attend meetings and present progression and contributions.
• Cross department awareness days to learn about other parts of the business.
• Technologies include Fluorescence, Luminescence, Flow cytometry, Cell Imaging, Mass Spec
• Complex models
• Scientific communication (for example presentations and scientific writing)

Role 3 – Genetic and Investigative Toxicology

Workplace Arrangements: Full time onsite required

Degree Requirements: Biomedical Sciences, ideally studying for a degree in Genetics including a module on Genetic Toxicology.

Overview of the Department

The department provides data in the areas of drug safety, bioimaging, biological markers and disposition to support the transition of therapeutic molecules from pre-clinical to the clinical stages of development. Genetic and Investigative Toxicology scientists provide expertise around safety and drug disposition to projects from the earliest biological target identification stage through to GSK medicines already on the market.

Key Placement Learnings

• Students undertaking a placement in genetic toxicology will perform investigative studies associated with the work of the dept, in the form of a research project. This will consist of literature reviews and establishment of expertise in one or more of the following technologies: flow cytometry, bacterial and mammalian cell/tissue culture, microscopy and image analysis.
• Following appropriate training, students will be expected to conduct independent research, collate/analyse experimental data, write summaries/reports and a dissertation at the end of year. They will also be expected to present the results of their work at the annual students review and external meetings, if appropriate.
• In addition, working alongside highly experienced genetic toxicologists, students will develop knowledge of the drug development process, the role of Non clinical safety and genetic toxicology; be involved in general laboratory management duties throughout the year to gain valuable experience in the daily workings of an industrial genetic toxicology lab to directly support the screening of potential new medicines; develop scientific, IT and other core skills

Role 4 – Biomarkers and Automation

Workplace Arrangements: Full time onsite required

Degree Requirements: Biology, Biochemistry, Biomedical Science, Cell Biology, Pharmacology, Chemistry or related life sciences disciplines

Overview of the Department

Within R&D, Biomarker and Bioanalytical Platforms is responsible for delivering high-quality data to support clinical trials and decision-making for new medicines. The UK team develops and implements methods for the measurement of soluble and cellular biomarkers in clinical samples, using a range of analytical techniques and automation platforms. We support studies across multiple disease areas including respiratory, immune-inflammation, infectious diseases and oncology. The placement will provide an excellent opportunity to gain exposure to a regulated laboratory environment, build an understanding of how biomarker data supports drug development, and use cutting-edge automation and technology to advance GSK’s goals.

Key Placement Learnings

• Assess soluble biomarkers using techniques such as ELISA and electrochemiluminescence (ECL) immunoassays.
• Assess cellular biomarkers in human blood using spectral flow cytometry.
• Use automated liquid handlers to perform and streamline the above processes.
• Develop, optimise and troubleshoot analytical methods on the above instruments.
• Work within a regulated environment (GCP)
• Process and analyse data using appropriate software tools.

Role 5 Large Molecule Research

Workplace Arrangements: Full time on site required

Degree Requirements: Biological Science/Biomedical Science/Biochemistry

Overview of the Department

Together with their therapy area partners, GSK Large Molecule Research are discovering, developing, and manufacturing novel medicines to benefit patients around the globe. The department is building a state-of-the-art end to end Biopharmaceutical capability, which delivers efficient discovery of antibody molecules that are selected and engineered for rapid development.

Key Placement Learnings

• Develop scientific writing and presentation skills
• Gain experience in data analysis
• Build on existing understanding and interest of Molecular Biology; Cell Biology; Immunology or Protein Biochemistry.

Role 6 – Extracellular-Targeted Cancer Therapeutics

Workplace Arrangements: Flexible working via performance with choice (office & home working may be available).

Degree Requirements: BSc(Hons) or Integrated Masters in a Biological Sciences subject (e.g. biology, biochemistry, immunology, biomedical sciences etc.)

Overview of the Department

The Extracellular-Targeted Cancer Therapeutics (ETCT) Biology Unit is part of the GSK Oncology drug discovery pipeline. The department aims to develop effective cancer therapies targeted at cancer-specific biology. Their primary focus is on two antibody-based modalities: Bispecific T-cell engagers (TCEs), and Antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs).

Key Placement Learnings

• Cell culture, cell viability assays, flow cytometry, molecular biology and ELISAs.
• Develop scientific research and professional skills, e.g. experimental design, experimental record keeping, data analysis, reporting and presentation skills.
• Gain a deeper understanding of tumour biology, T-cell function, targeting modalities and the immuno-oncology landscape.
• Deliver a research project aligned with our department goals
• Perform experiments in our cell and molecular biology laboratory
• Learn data analysis methods and present experimental results within biology meetings and departmental meetings, with opportunities to present to a larger audience.

Role 7 – Bioimaging – Non-Clinical Histology

Degree Requirements: Biology, Biomedical Science, Molecular Biology

Overview of the Department

The NCH team supports non-clinical Research from early Discovery up to the point where the project enters the clinical trials for the first time. We use classical histology techniques, advanced molecular biology, and computer science to analyse tissue samples from pre-clinical animal models and Complex In Vitro Models (CIVMs) . These methods enable us to deliver unique data to project teams to enable them to progress projects with confidence. Specifically, we deliver focused spatial biology transcript/protein measurements to address specific hypotheses addressing mechanisms of action of tool molecules or GSK drugs and/or spatial localisation of cells/cellular responses.

Key Placement Learnings

• Provide support for projects using the capabilities and technologies within the Spatial Multiplexing Team
• Develop scientific research and professional skills, e.g. experimental design, study planning, experimental record keeping, data analysis, reporting and presentation skills.
• Apply end-to-end proteomics and transcriptomics workflows, including sample quality control and assay execution.
• Perform key histology and molecular biology techniques (e.g. tissue sectioning, RNA extraction, IHC/ISH staining, imaging).
• Conduct image and/or spatial data analysis, to generate high-quality, reproducible results within agreed timelines.

Role 8 – Bioimaging – Cellular Imaging and Dynamics

Workplace Arrangements: Full time on site required

Degree Requirements: Biomedical sciences, chemistry, biology, biochemistry

Our Cellular Imaging and Dynamics group is at the heart of this innovation, supporting all areas of Research and beyond, with a focus on bioimaging at cellular and ultrastructural resolutions. We are not just users of existing technologies—we are innovators, constantly staying ahead of the curve through our expansive internal and external networks. Collaborating closely with in vivo, clinical, and MALDI bioimaging teams, we leverage the vast resources available across GSK R&D. • Explore how compounds interact with cells and alter underlying biological processes.
• Hands-on training in mass spectrometry, learning to identify endogenous and exogenous molecules from individual cells.
• Sampling from live cells and performing both optical and mass spectrometry imaging at cellular and sub-cellular resolutions.

Role 9 – Biopharm Analytical Automation

Workplace Arrangements: Full time onsite required

Degree Requirements: Biology, Biochemistry, Biomedical Sciences, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Engineering, Data Sciences or equivalent with practical experience.

Overview of the Department

Analytical Platforms and Platform Modernisation (APPM) sits in the Analytical Development department of Pharma R&D. In our department, we focus on providing technologies for the business to facilitate and support the development of new medicines. Among these technologies, the Analytical Automation and Digital Platforms Team UK aims at implementing automated workflows to optimise the use of resources, accelerate drug development, and generate high quality, standardised data.

Key Placement Learnings

• Operating and scripting advanced automated equipment such as liquid handlers, multifunctional platforms, and analytical instruments.
• Employing, optimising, and developing automated workflows to expedite drug development processes.
