Job Description

STATEMENT OF THE JOB

The Alcoholism Counselor I will provide the full range of counseling services to individuals with Substance Use Disorders to a formerly homeless and MICA population.

The agency has embraced the concept of a fully system of care for all consumers of service. This requires that the staff assess the client’s needs holistically and see it’s as their responsibility to connect the client with services needed-internal or external to the agency, regardless of the door through which the consumer enters the system.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Provide intake, information and referral services to walk-in and scheduled clients as assigned.
• Engage clients in the development of an appropriate and accurate assessment and treatment plan.
• Work collaboratively with service providers and on-site team to develop an appropriate and accurate assessment and treatment plan.
• Provide case management services for clients including assessment, psychosocial history, treatment plans, group and individual counselling services for clients.
• Prepare, conduct, and document assigned group counseling, client education group and individual counseling sessions.
• Ensure that referrals are made to the appropriate internal and external services as required to meet the consumer needs.
• Follow up on all referrals made on behalf of consumer/family and respond to all referrals made to your to your program
• Provide a variety of modalities to include individual and group counseling, education on all issues relating to Substance Use Disorder, as well as recovery oriented/harm reduction program activities.
• Maintain updated records on the progress of the client.
• Establish linkage to community services that focus on Substance Use Disorder recovery and keep updated resource book on addiction programs.
• Facilitate Substance Use groups.
• Educate staff on addiction problems.
• Participate in in-service training, conferences and workshops.
• Participate in outreach and special events.
• Participate and give input in weekly team meetings and staff meetings.
• Participate in cross-program service reviews that support the planning and coordination of service delivery.

SPECIFICATIONS FOR EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES

• Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services, Sociology, Psychology, or a related field from an accredited college required.
• NYS CASAC, CASAC-T

SPECIFICATIONS FOR EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

• 2-3 years of experience working with MICA and homeless clients preferred with an ability to demonstrate sensitivity to the issues of the homeless population.
• Strong communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills.
• Bi-lingual Spanish/English speaking a plus.
• Ability to evaluate and intervene in crisis situations.
• Excellent oral & written communication, time management, organizational, & computer skills required.

SPECIFICATIONS FOR PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Able to sit, stand, & walk for extended periods of time.
• Ability to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, & office equipment.
• Ability to conduct presentations before large groups of people.
• Able to lift up to 30 pounds.
• Ability to read printed & handwritten materials and computer screens.
• Ability to work flexible hours (evenings/weekends) as assigned.
• Ability to meet with residents and/or staff throughout facilities.
• Ability to travel to multiple locations within the five boroughs as needed.
