The Department of Military Affairs is looking to hire a Building/Grounds Maintenance Worker located in Forest Park, IL. This position under direct supervision, regularly performs a variety of semi-skilled labor or building mechanical work below the journeyman level and may directly assist skilled craftsmen; or operates heavy equipment, as required, in the maintenance of the facility and grounds. The Department of Military Affairs works with the members of the Illinois Air and Army National Guard. We welcome all interested applicants to apply.

Essential Functions

  • Performs routine ground maintenance of the Forest Park Armory.
  • Performs a variety of semi-skilled labor and building mechanical work below the journey level and assists skilled craftsmen.
  • Repairs fences, roadways, bridges, sidewalks, etc.
  • Maintains interior cleanliness of facility.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and repairs lawn care equipment i.e. push and/or riding lawn mowers, tractors, weed eaters, sprayers, and other power equipment.
  • Loads and unloads trucks which requires the possession of appropriate valid driver's license when moving the trucks; sets up and takes down tables, chairs, etc.; moves office equipment; carries moderate to heavy items up to 80 lbs.
  • Performs building security duties such as checking for fires and prowlers, checks windows and doors.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of high school.
  • Requires one year of maintenance work experience preferably associated with the building/mechanical trades and/or heavy equipment operation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers the ability to follow oral and written instructions including blueprints and other diagrams.
  • Prefers the ability to use power tools, operate heavy equipment and perform semi-skilled manual work in a safe manner.
  • Prefers working knowledge of construction and maintenance tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Prefers elementary knowledge of one or more of the building and mechanical trades.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires the ability to pass a DoD background investigation and obtain a DoD Common Access Card (CAC) prior to hire or transfer.
  • Requires possession of appropriate valid driver's license.
  • Requires ability to lift and carry 80 pounds, i.e., heavy boxes, supplies, etc.; ability to move heavy furniture and equipment.
  • Requires being on hands and feet for long periods of time, climb stairs and ladders.
  • Requires withstanding extreme temperature changes and exposure to a variety of chemical cleaning agents.

Work Hours: 7am - 3pm (1/2 hr paid lunch) Can vary based on mission requirements
