Job Description

Skilled field technician responsible for operations and maintenance of utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) equipment and associated balance-of-plant. Works under general supervision to independently perform preventive maintenance and routine corrective maintenance, diagnose and repair common faults across electrical, controls, communications, and balance-of-plant systems within assigned scope, and maintain complete service and CMMS documentation. May perform switching when individually qualified and authorized under the site switching program and may provide informal guidance to entry-level technicians.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure strict adherence to all safety standards, including OSHA, NFPA 70E principles (as applicable), state and local regulations, and company safety policies. Promote and support a strong safety culture, including hazard recognition, quality job briefings, stop-work authority, and safe work practices. Identify, escalate, and support resolution of electrical and operational safety hazards.
  • Ensure consistent application of Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), energized-work controls, and PPE requirements across assigned work scopes, performed independently as a qualified person within the limits of training and authorization.
  • Independently execute scheduled and unscheduled preventive and corrective maintenance on BESS equipment and balance-of-plant within assigned scope, including PCS/inverter interfaces, battery racks/enclosures, HVAC/auxiliary systems, transformers (as applicable), switchgear, and related controls.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot routine electrical, controls, and communications/SCADA faults using monitoring tools, OEM diagnostic utilities, and PLC/controls interfaces where applicable; verify repairs and return equipment to service safely within scope.
  • Perform medium-/high-voltage switching only when individually qualified and authorized under Strata’s substation switching program, within the limits of that authorization; otherwise support switching and isolation under the direction of authorized personnel.
  • Interpret electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, and OEM manuals to support troubleshooting, maintenance, and safe work planning.
  • Use the full complement of electrical test equipment and field tools (multimeters, insulation testers, low-resistance ohmmeters as applicable, IR thermometer/camera) to diagnose issues and verify repairs.
  • Support monitoring and communications tasks, including alarm/event review, data extraction, basic network troubleshooting, and coordination with the Remote Operations/Monitoring team.
  • Coordinate with the Site Supervisor and vendor/OEM personnel for planned service activities; support safe execution and capture closeout documentation (photos, test records, service reports, as-left condition).
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and complete records in the CMMS, including work orders, maintenance reports, and inspection/test results.
  • Provide informal task guidance to entry-level (Level I) technicians as assigned.
  • Support emergency response activities and Emergency Action Plan execution. Maintain site readiness and housekeeping. Other duties as assigned.

Environmental Responsibilities:

  • Participate in environmental compliance programs, inspections, and administrative recordkeeping.
  • Support and maintaining compliance with Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.
  • Assist with environmental incident response and mitigation activities as required.

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Two (2) to four (4) years of experience in utility-scale PV, BESS sites (balance-of-plant/controls/communications), substations, or equivalent industrial electrical/power systems with directly transferable skills.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA requirements, NFPA 70E principles, NESC awareness, and MV safety practices applicable to the work scope.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Working knowledge of AC/DC electrical theory, three-phase power systems, and energy storage system fundamentals appropriate to the role.
  • Ability to read and understand electrical drawings/schematics and OEM manuals.
  • Proficiency with test equipment and tools used in electrical maintenance (multimeters, insulation testers, IR camera/thermography tools, etc.).
  • Proficiency with CMMS platforms, maintenance reporting tools, and ability to learn additional software/platforms as required.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to coordinate with technicians, supervisors, vendors, subcontractors, and support teams.

Physical Requirements/Work Environment:

  • Must be able to work in an outdoor environment for extended periods of time.
  • Must have the ability to travel for extended duration to remote project sites.
  • Must be able to stoop, kneel or bend.
  • Must be able to lift, push or pull 50 lbs. overhead repeatedly.
  • 20/40 vision in each eye, with or without correction and ability to distinguish colors.
  • Ability to wear full complement of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE
