The opportunity
As a BESS System Architect, you are the technical authority for end-to-end Battery Energy Storage System architecture, spanning grid, electrical balance of plant, batteries, power conversion, automation, software, and services.
This is a non-managerial, but a pivotal role within the T&SD organization, critical to both execution excellence and future differentiation.
You ensure architectural coherence, technical robustness, and long-term scalability of GPQSS BESS solutions, supporting R&D projects, but as well providing expert support to CoC (tendering & execution), and to Technology and Product Management in roadmap definition.
The role requires strong system-level thinking, the ability to author architecture and system specification documents, and credibility to influence multidisciplinary teams without line authority.
– System Architecture & Technical Authority
•Define, maintain, and evolve the end-to-end BESS system architecture from grid to cell, including EBoP, PCS, batteries, protection, automation, software, and services.
•Act as architectural backbone for R&D projects, ensuring technical coherence during development and integration.
•Own the system architecture framework, reference models, and design principles for GPQSS BESS solutions.
•Author and maintain architecture and system specification documents aligned with GPQSS standards and comparable in depth and clarity to existing BESS architecture analyses.
– System Requirements & Integration
•Lead system-level requirement definition, ensuring traceability across disciplines and lifecycle phases.
•Identify and manage cross-domain dependencies (electrical, mechanical, control, software, cybersecurity, services).
•Support architectural trade-offs related to performance, safety, cost, scalability, and lifecycle value.
– Tendering & Execution Support
•Provide architectural guidance during tendering, feasibility studies, and pre-FEED activities.
•Support execution teams by resolving complex system-level issues and integration challenges.
– Technology Outlook & Differentiation
•Contribute to future-looking technology roadmaps, including modularization, pre-engineering, standardization, and platform strategies.
•Support competitor and market analysis from a system architecture perspective.
•Enable differentiation through software-enabled value stacking and service-oriented architectures
– Collaboration & Influence
•Act as a key technical interface toward Product Management, CoC, T&SD, suppliers, and partners.
•Influence without line authority, enabling alignment across global, multicultural teams.
Your background
–Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Power Systems, Control Engineering, or equivalent.
–Minimum 10 years of experience in Battery Energy Storage Systems or closely related grid-scale energy systems.
– Principle / Senior Principal Engineer level technical seniority and credibility.
–Proven experience in defining complex system architectures and writing high-level architecture and system specification documents.
–Deep understanding of BESS components: batteries, PCS, EBoP, protection, automation, EMS, SCADA, and digital services.
–Solid knowledge of grid codes, grid-forming and grid-following concepts, and power system studies (RMS and EMT).
–Experience working in multidisciplinary R&D environments and complex international projects.
–Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts to diverse stakeholders.
–Experience with modularization, pre-engineering, and scalable system design.
–Exposure to lifecycle- and service-oriented BESS architectures.
–Familiarity with competitor analysis, technology scouting, and roadmap definition.
–Knowledge of international standards and certification processes (IEC, IEEE, UL).
–Strategic mindset balancing short-term delivery needs with long-term innovation.
