BESS Strategy & Advisory Consultant (market, business models, client advisory)

As a Consulting Electrical Engineer – BESS, you advise clients across the full lifecycle of grid‑connected battery storage from early-stage feasibility and grid connection strategy through concept design, vendor evaluation, and support during commissioning and operational optimization. You translate technical complexity into clear, decision‑ready recommendations and deliver high‑quality study outputs that stand up to scrutiny from developers, utilities, lenders, insurers, and authorities.

Typical Engagements (Consulting Context)

  • Feasibility & Concept Selection: technical concept screening, architecture tradeoffs (AC/DC coupling, MV/HV interface), risk/opportunity mapping.
  • Grid Connection & Compliance Advisory: grid code requirement interpretation and compliance planning, support to DSO/TSO interactions
  • Owner’s Engineer / Independent Engineer: technical reviews, design audits, package specifications, factory/site acceptance support.
  • EMS/PPC & Controls Advisory: defining required EMS/PPC functionalities and integration expectations with protection/control infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities (Consulting‑Oriented)

1) Client Advisory & Study Delivery

  • Lead or contribute to consulting deliverables such as feasibility studies, grid connection strategies, concept design reports, technical specifications, and risk assessments
  • Run technical workshops with clients and stakeholders; capture requirements and convert them into clear scopes, assumptions, and deliverables.
  • Build defensible recommendations by evaluating alternatives and documenting tradeoffs (cost, schedule, performance, compliance, operability).

2) Technical Authority: Electrical & Grid Interface

  • Provide expert guidance on MV/HV electrical interfaces, protection philosophy, and integration of BESS into existing networks.
  • Support or manage power system studies with internal/external partners (e.g., grid compliance modelling) and translate results into actionable client decisions.
  • Advise on grid impact topics (e.g., EMC / network effects) and what evidence is needed for compliance and permitting.

3) Vendor, OEM & EPC Interface Management

  • Review OEM/EPC proposals, clarify technical scope, and identify exclusions/risks; support tender evaluations and negotiation readiness.
  • Define and review technical specifications for electrical packages (transformers, switchgear, protection, auxiliaries), ensuring alignment with project objectives and grid code expectations.
  • Contribute to FAT/SAT planning and acceptance criteria; provide punch‑list support and technical closure guidance.

4) Documentation Quality, Governance & Risk

  • Create high‑quality consulting outputs: reports, calculations, specifications, decision logs, and technical presentations suited for executive and lender audiences.
  • Maintain a technical risk register safety, compliance, integration, performance, and interface risks; propose mitigations and verification plans.
  • Ensure alignment with relevant standards and requirements (examples referenced in internal material include VDE/IEC/DIN and grid connection requirements such as VDE AR-N 4120/4130).

Deliverables You Will Own / Contribute To

  • Feasibility / concept selection reports and single‑line concept packs
  • Grid connection and compliance roadmap + evidence matrix
  • Tender technical specification packages and bid evaluation matrices
  • Technical due diligence report + risk register + mitigation plan
  • EMS/PPC functional requirement briefs (integration with protection/control infrastructure

Required Qualifications

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering / Power Systems (BSc/MSc).
  • Several years’ experience in grid‑connected assets (BESS, renewables, substations, industrial power).
  • Ability to operate credibly with clients and external stakeholders while retaining hands‑on engineering judgement.
  • Good German and English language skills, written and spoken
  • Willingness to travel

Technical Competencies (Consulting-Relevant)

  • MV/HV systems, protection concepts, earthing/grounding, grid interconnection interfaces.
  • Knowledge of relevant standards and grid code frameworks (VDE/IEC/DIN; VDE AR‑N 4120/4130 referenced as relevant for grid connection requirements).
  • Familiarity with BESS subsystems and interfaces: PCS, transformers, switchgear, auxiliary services, monitoring/control integration.
  • Awareness of key gaps clients often have to evidence (battery technologies, regulations for battery installations, EMC/network effects are explicitly highlighted as areas requiring more than basic knowledge).

Consulting Skills & Behaviours

  • Strong problem structuring hypotheses, assumptions, and clear lines of reasoning.
  • Stakeholder management: communicate with developers, utilities, OEMs/EPCs, authorities, lenders.
  • Clear writing: produce decision‑grade documents under time pressure.
  • Commercial awareness: scope definition, change control, proposal input, value‑based recommendations.
