BESS Project Manager (End‑to‑End Project Delivery)

The BESS Project Manager is responsible for the end‑to‑end delivery of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects, covering all phases from early development through engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and handover.

The role ensures that the project delivers against schedule, cost, quality, safety, and compliance objectives, while managing all technical and commercial interfaces across customers, stakeholders, contractors, and authorities.

Key Responsibilities

1. Overall Project Leadership & Accountability

  • Full end‑to‑end responsibility from feasibility to EPC or EPCM project delivery (development → COD → handover)
  • Define and execute project strategy, execution plan, and governance structure
  • Ensure alignment with project objectives, contracts, and stakeholder expectations
  • Lead and manage the integrated project team (consultancy, engineering, construction, commissioning)

2. Schedule, Cost & Risk Management

  • Establish and control:
    • Master schedule
    • Project budget, forecasts and cost trending
    • Risk register and mitigation plans
  • Identify risks to timeline, cost, and performance and implement mitigation actions
  • Ensure timely achievement of milestones (NTP, energization, COD)

3. Client, Contractor & Interface Management

  • Manage
    • Clients
    • Internal and external stakeholders, lenders
    • EPC contractors, BESS suppliers, and BoP contractors
    • Grid operators (TSO/DSO) and (local) authorities
  • Ensure clear scope definition, responsibility allocation, and interface control
  • Manage contractor performance, progress, and deliverables

4. Engineering & Design Oversight

  • Lead coordination and approval of:
    • Engineering deliverables
    • Technical specifications and design packages
  • Ensure design compliance with:
    • Grid requirements and standards
    • Employer’s Requirements and contracts
  • Support technical decision-making and change management (MOC)

5. Procurement & Contract Management

  • Support tendering, evaluation, and contracting of:
    • EPC packages
    • BESS systems and HV equipment
  • Manage contracts (including claims, variations, and change orders)
  • Ensure contractual obligations are met across all parties

6. Construction, Quality & HSE Management

  • Oversee construction phase:
    • Progress monitoring and reporting
    • Quality assurance / quality control
    • HSE compliance and site safety
  • Coordinate site management and construction supervision teams
  • Ensure compliance with permits, standards, and safety requirements

7. Commissioning & Handover

  • Oversee:
    • Commissioning planning and execution
    • Performance testing (including grid compliance tests)
    • System integration and operational readiness
  • Ensure successful handover to operations, including:
    • Documentation
    • Training
    • Warranty management

8. Required Qualifications, Experience and expectations

Education

  • Degree in Engineering (Electrical, Energy, or related discipline)
  • Additional qualification in Project Management (advantageous)

Professional Experience

  • Proven experience managing large-scale infrastructure and/or energy projects
  • Experience in:
    • BESS, renewables, and/or grid-connected assets
    • EPC / Owner’s Engineering environments
  • Demonstrated track record of end‑to‑end project delivery

Other

  • Confident speaker/reader in German
  • Willingness to travel (within Germany and internationally)
  • Regular on-site presence required

Project Delivery

  • Project execution strategy and lifecycle management
  • Schedule (Primavera / MS Project), cost control, and forecasting
  • Risk and change management (MOC, NCRs, claims)

Technical Understanding

  • BESS system architecture (battery, PCS, EMS, BoP)
  • Grid connection and compliance requirements
  • Interfaces between electrical, civil, and control systems

Commercial & Contractual

  • EPC contracts and multi‑package execution models
  • Contract administration and claims management
  • Procurement and tender evaluation

Key Soft Skills

  • Strong leadership and decision‑making capability
  • Stakeholder management across complex interfaces
  • Structured, documentation‑driven working approach
  • Ability to manage complexity and drive delivery under pressure
