Job Description

The Benefactor Service Associate Director is an important relationship, process and project manager, serving on a team of nine within the Department of Development’s Annual and Midlevel Giving team. The ASSOCDIR enhances the midlevel benefactor experience through a focus on pipeline development, qualification and cultivation; process improvement, and project management. The ASSOCDIR will serve as an "on-call" resource at their respective site during business hours responding to the full scope of inquiries, including face-to-face meetings with individuals. The ASSOCDIR will closely partner with the Senior Director – Benefactor Service, Benefactor Service Assistant Directors and Direct Response team.

Assignments may include identifying, ideating, strategizing, developing, and implementing comprehensive benefactor journeys, communication tools and process improvement; managing non-people-management operational functions, benefactor service resources, and complementary vendor relationships; and partnering with Development colleagues to enhance the midlevel benefactor experience. The role requires significant focus on developing resources and talking points for the midlevel audience. Additional responsibilities include telephone, email and written interaction with benefactors to initiate, upgrade and renew midlevel five-figure giving, qualify major gift potential, cultivate strong philanthropic relationships and provide stewardship. The ASSOCDIR is expected to call and personally meet with benefactors, the latter occurring on campus and within driving distance, and perform other duties as assigned by the manager.

In a collaborative model, the incumbent will have close alignment amongst teams in the Communications and External Relations vertical, Operations vertical and AML’s agency of record, to best respond to business needs.


The ASSOCDIR needs to possess a high level of proficiency in project management, initiative-taking, and the demonstrated ability to build strong internal and external relationships. The ASSOCDIR requires a continuous learning mindset to stay abreast of strategic funding priorities to align benefactor interest with Mayo Clinic priorities, and the ability to translate scientific knowledge for a lay audience. The ASSOCDIR needs to possess a high level of comfort calling prospects and benefactors. Development professionals at Mayo Clinic are required to adhere to the “Donor Bill of Rights” and ethical standards set forth for the department and the institution.

Requires a bachelor's degree and a minimum of three years' experience to include one or more of the following: annual fund, special events, stewardship or cultivation of benefactors and/or customers/clients, marketing, and communications. Incumbent must be a self-motivated, self-directed and highly organized individual who will promote a productive, collegial workplace and be a professional ambassador for Mayo Clinic. The associate must be able to work effectively in a consensus-style operation that expects and promotes teamwork. Belief in the mission and strong ethical conduct are essential. Requires excellent oral and written communications skills, a broad-based knowledge of fund development and the ability to work in a complex environment with multi-dimensional points of view. Must be comfortable with ambiguity, possess the ability to inspire trust and confidence, and communicate effectively with internal and external audiences. The ability to work independently, manage multiple projects, and maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality is essential. Must be proficient in the use of information technology and management of database systems. Some travel is required, primarily within driving distance. A valid driver’s license is required.
