About You!
You are a qualified and passionate animal behaviour professional who is committed to improving animal welfare through evidence-based behavioural assessment, training and rehabilitation. You have a strong understanding of canine behaviour, learning theory and welfare principles and are motivated by the opportunity to help greyhounds successfully transition into life as companion animals.
You have experience conducting behavioural assessments, developing behaviour modification plans and supporting animals with a range of behavioural needs. You are confident assessing behaviour, identifying welfare concerns and implementing practical interventions that promote positive outcomes for both animals and their carers. With excellent communication and interpersonal skills, you can build strong relationships with adopters, foster carers, veterinary professionals, volunteers and colleagues.
You are comfortable providing behavioural advice, education and support to a diverse range of stakeholders and can adapt your communication style to suit different audiences and situations. You are highly observant, organised and solutions-focused, with the ability to maintain accurate records, manage multiple cases and contribute to informed decision-making through clear behavioural reporting and recommendations. You thrive in a collaborative environment and enjoy working alongside veterinary, welfare, kennel and rehoming teams to support the behavioural health and wellbeing of animals in care. Experience working with behaviourally complex cases,
rehabilitation programs or animal welfare organisations will be highly regarded.

About this role!
Greyhounds as Pets (GAP) is seeking a passionate and experienced Animal Behaviourist to
play a key role in supporting the behavioural health, welfare and successful rehoming of greyhounds across our program.
This rewarding role is responsible for conducting behavioural and temperament assessments, implementing behaviour modification and rehabilitation programs and monitoring the behavioural wellbeing of greyhounds throughout their journey
in care. Working with dogs of varying behavioural needs, you will help identify
barriers to successful rehoming and develop practical, evidence-based strategies that support positive outcomes.
You will provide behavioural guidance and support to adopters, foster carers, volunteers
and staff, helping to build confidence, strengthen human to animal relationships and promote successful transitions into home environments. The role also involves delivering behavioural consultations, supporting post-adoption outcomes and contributing to foster care and rehoming decisions through professional behavioural assessment and recommendations.
Working collaboratively with veterinary professionals, welfare, kennel and rehoming teams, you will contribute to the management of behavioural and welfare cases, support rehabilitation plans and help ensure every greyhound receives individualised care that promotes their wellbeing and long-term success.
Key Responsibilities
As the Behaviourist, you will:
- Conduct behavioural and temperament assessments of greyhounds entering and progressing through the GAP program, helping to identify individual needs and support successful rehoming outcomes.
- Develop, implement and monitor evidence-based behaviour modification, training and enrichment plans to support the rehabilitation, welfare and confidence of greyhounds in care.
- Monitor behavioural progress and welfare across the greyhound population, identifying emerging concerns and recommending appropriate interventions to support wellbeing and rehoming readiness.
- Provide behavioural guidance, coaching and support to adopters, foster carers, volunteers and staff, helping to build confidence and promote best-practice handling and training techniques.
- Deliver behavioural consultations and post-adoption support, assisting adopters and foster carers to successfully manage behavioural challenges and achieve positive outcomes.
- Work collaboratively with veterinary professionals, including veterinary behaviourists, to support greyhounds requiring behavioural treatment plans and monitor progress throughout rehabilitation.
- Maintain accurate behavioural assessments, case notes and records within organisational systems, ensuring high-quality reporting and data integrity.
- Support behavioural case management for moderate to complex cases, contributing to assessment, intervention planning and ongoing review.
- Assist kennel and operational teams in identifying and managing behavioural risks, promoting positive welfare outcomes and behavioural stability across the greyhound population.
- Contribute to foster care, adoption and matching processes by providing behavioural insights and recommendations that support successful placements.
- Participate in adoption days, community events and rehoming activities, representing the GAP program professionally and promoting positive outcomes for greyhounds.
- Support behavioural preparation, assessment and monitoring of greyhounds participating in specialised rehoming pathways and programs.
- Assist with welfare-related activities, including greyhound intake, transport, relocation and day-to-day care where required.
- Build and maintain positive relationships with adopters, foster carers and industry stakeholders, promoting a culture of collaboration, education and exceptional customer service.
- Ensure all behavioural practices align with animal welfare best practice, organisational policies and continuous improvement initiatives.

About Your Skill Set!
- Qualifications in animal care, canine behaviour or a related field
- Proficient animal husbandry and handling skills.
- At least 1 year experience in animal behaviour modification
- Previous experience working in an animal shelter desirable.
- Passion for animal care and wellbeing.
- Administrative, data entry and computer proficiency skills highly desirable
- Current Full Driver’s license and willingness to travel.
- Ability to work outside normal business hours, including weekends, public holidays and overnight trips.
- Superior organisational and time management skills including a demonstrated ability to manage and prioritise tasks to meet tight timeframes.
- Strong communication skill with the ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with a range of stakeholders.
- High level personal ethics, integrity, respect for others and an ability to deal professionally and effectively with a diverse range of people.
