• Responsible for providing direct observation of patients as directed by the nursing plan of care and under the supervision of the behavioral health nursing staff and/or nursing supervisor; reporting on changes in the conditions of patients to the appropriate staff members; interacting and coping effectively with diverse populations in sudden, stressful situations resulting from trauma, and physical and mental illness; and performing tasks that are within the scope of his/her educational preparation, knowledge, and permitted by the policies and procedures of Southern Illinois healthcare and other local, state, and federal guidelines.
• Assists licensed nursing personnel in giving patient care, caring for the personal needs and comfort of the patients. Assists licensed nursing personnel in giving patient care, caring for the personal needs and comfort of the patients. As a sitter, they will be required to assist, other nursing departments sitting with patients that may be a danger to themselves or others.
Education
• High School diploma or equivalent
Licenses and Certification
• Basic life support (BLS) required
Experience and Skills
• Preferred previous experience with patients in a hospital setting.
Role Specific Responsibilities
• Direct patient care: general personal care of the patient (bathing, bed changing, feeding, activity; vital signs as examples) as directed.
• Reports all pertinent findings to RN staff.
• Promotes the safety of self, staff, and patients.
• Ongoing patient and family education.
• Completes all annual in-service training and competencies.
• Maintains confidentially of all patients, whether in-patients or out-patients.
