Mental Health Cooperative, Inc. (MHC) was formed in 1993 to serve individuals with severe and persistent mental illness. Since then, we have expanded our services to children and adolescents with severe emotional disorders across Middle and East Tennessee.

Our sole purpose is to support and treat those challenged with serious mental illness and poverty. Although based out of Nashville, we serve several communities across middle and East Tennessee with satellite offices in Antioch, Gallatin, Dickson, Columbia, Cleveland, Murfreesboro, Clarksville, Cookeville, Chattanooga, and Memphis.

Job Title Behavioral Health Clinician (SUD)

Counsel with emphasis on prevention and recovery. Work with individuals and groups to promote optimum mental health. This position will help individuals deal with addictions and substance abuse; family, parenting, and marital problems; suicide; stress management; problems with self-esteem; and issues associated with aging and mental and emotional health.


Position Responsibilities:

1. Utilize evidence based therapeutic framework, counsel consumers and patients, individually and group sessions, to assist in overcoming dependencies, adjusting to life and making changes.
2. Guide consumers in the development of skills and strategies for dealing with their problems using evidence-based modalities.
3. Encourage consumers to express their feelings and discuss what is happening in their lives and help them to develop insight into themselves and their relationships.
4. Develop and implement treatment plans based on clinical experience and knowledge.
5. Modify treatment activities and approaches as needed in order to comply with changes in consumer’s status.
6. Learn about new developments in their field by reading professional literature, attending courses and seminars, establishing and maintaining contact with other social service agencies.
7. Counsel family members to assist them in understanding, dealing with and supporting consumers.
8. Evaluate the effectiveness of counseling programs and consumers’ progress in resolving identified problems and moving towards defined objectives.
9. Refer patients, consumers or family members to community resources or to specialists as necessary.
10. Meet with families, clinic providers, care managers and other interested parties in order to exchange necessary information during the treatment process.
11. Collaborate with other staff members to perform clinical assessments and develop treatment plans.

Other Responsibilities
● Responsible for attending all mandatory in-services, continuing education and annual health requirements
● Comply with all Corporate Compliance policies, practices and procedures Report all unethical activities to supervisor, Corporate Compliance Office, Values Hotline number or Human Resource Director
● Comply with all OSHA and safety policies, practices, and procedures. Report all unsafe practices or accidents to supervisor, Safety Supervisor and/or OSHA Coordinator
● Will be compliant with the relevant regulations concerning the privacy and security of consumer’s protected health information (PHI) as established by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA)
● Participate in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals
● Perform other duties as assigned
● Provide leadership to others through example and sharing of knowledge/skill
● Follow all policies and procedures set by the Agency

Essential Skills and Experience:
• Master’s degree (M.A., M.S.) in Mental Health field
• Licensed or license eligible

Essential Requirements for the Position:
• Acceptable Motor Vehicle Report (MVR)
• Acceptable Criminal Background Investigation

Joint Commission Competencies:
• Demonstrates effective communication skills with referral sources, consumers and other collateral contacts involved in consumer care as evidenced by courteous demeanor and positive attitude with consumers and collateral contacts.
• Documentation is completed in a timely manner, thorough, follows format, satisfies requirements, and outlines plan of care and appropriate notification of treatment team of proposed plan of care.
• Assessments include appropriate integration of historical data and clinical data to formulate a clear and accurate diagnosis.
• Demonstrates ability to provide accurate assessment of consumer safety as evidenced accurate completion of the Columbia Suicide Severity Scale and PRAPARE.
• All necessary paperwork is obtained and completed accurately and submitted within a timely manner.
• Demonstrates ability to manage volume of work completed daily within the requirements set for by the agency expectations.
• THL Treatment Plans contain clear, measurable goals that are relevant to the consumers unique needs as well as accurate completion of DLA for all consumers.
• Displays sensitivity and responsiveness to consumer’s culture, age, gender and disabilities.
• Establish and maintain a therapeutic relationship with the consumer and their support system.
• Demonstrates ability to provide high quality evidenced based interventions and they are implemented appropriately as evidenced by applying theoretical basis of intervention and general strategies related to client care.
