Job Purpose
The Behavioral Health Assessment Team (BHAT) is responsible for providing comprehensive mental health assessment services to patients and families who present themselves to the hospital. The BHAT person primarily works in the Emergency Department, providing initial mental health assessments and contributing information and interventions to the treatment team for admission, discharge planning, or disposition to another facility. The BHAT member will also provide these services in other medical center departments as needed.
Responsibilities
3 Cs:
o Provide and utilize assessment and intervention strategies that promote improvement of mental health, psychosocial problems, efficient use of psychiatric and medical resources, and facilitate safe and appropriate discharge planning.
o Communicates effectively with the Treatment Team to determine the disposition of patients who present to the Emergency Department or other departments within the Medical Center.
o Plans and coordinates therapeutic program services on the behavioral health program unit.
o Responsible for participating in the treatment team and adding feedback regarding the patient's presentation during initial admission.
o Participates in assisting the ED and inpatient hospital units with providing resources to discharging patients, complete safety plans as needed, and developing mechanisms for the exchange of appropriate information with sources outside the hospital.
o Maintains performance improvement activities within the department and participates in quality improvement activities.
o Provide expertise in consultation and support for the Protective Custody legal process throughout the Medical Center.
o Communicates effectively with patients, families, and agencies, maintaining a positive, professional image.
