Position Summary

We are seeking a Behavioral Consultant to join our team, working collaboratively to enhance behavioral support services for children aged 0-6 years and their families.

Under the direction of the Manager of Early Years Support and Wellness, the Behavioral Consultant provides culturally informed, evidence-based behavioral interventions for children with developmental, emotional, or behavioral challenges. This role involves implementing individualized plans, collaborating with families and caregivers, and supporting children to achieve positive developmental outcomes. The Behavioral Consultant will also engage in community relations activities to ensure services are aligned with cultural values and meet the needs of children and families.

What You'll Do

Behavioral Interventions (oversee the interventionist)

• Develop and oversee the individualized behavior intervention plans focused on the unique needs of children aged 0-6 years.
• Provide guidance to the interventionist in the use of evidence-based strategies to promote skill development, manage challenging behaviors, and support emotional regulation in children.
• Collaborate with parents, caregivers, and other professionals to ensure interventions align with the child’s developmental and behavioral goals.
• Assess the child’s behavior and identify the underlying causes for negative or harmful behavior.
• Create a safe and supportive environment that encourages children to develop new positive behaviors.
• Provide coaching, mentorship and ongoing support to the interventionist to ensure consistency across all support settings.

Family Support

• Provide training and guidance to families on behavior management techniques tailored to the child’s needs.
• Empower caregivers with culturally relevant strategies to support their child’s development and strengthen the family unit.

Service Delivery

• Oversee and provide guidance to the interventionist to ensure the most effective implementation of client programs and behavioral strategies.
• Provide consultation and guidance on intervention strategies within the child’s home, school, or community settings as needed.
• Coordinate with staff, educators, and other professionals to ensure seamless service delivery and consistency in behavioral strategies.
• Adapt interventions to respect and integrate the cultural values and traditions of the community.
• Teach clients new skills and techniques that promote healthy behavior, self-regulation, and communication.

Monitoring and Reporting

• Track and document progress for each child, maintaining accurate and timely records in alignment with requirements.
• Conduct regular assessments and provide updates to the Manager and caregivers on the child’s progress and any needed adjustments.
• Ensure interventions meet program goals and comply with regulatory and funding requirements.

Collaboration and Professional Development

• Participate in training, team meetings, and program reviews to stay current on best practices and program expectations.
• Work collaboratively with other team members and external partners to ensure holistic and effective support for children.
• Provide feedback and recommendations to enhance the effectiveness of the program and services.

Other Duties

• Additional responsibilities as needed to support the community and uphold our shared values.

Working / Special Conditions

• Initial and ongoing employment is subject to submission of a clear Criminal Record Review Program Check to ensure the safety and trust of the communities we serve. This check will be conducted every five years.
• Initial and ongoing commitment to the values and guidelines of Sq'éwqel (Seabird Island Band), including our policies, procedures, standards of practice, and laws, is essential. This commitment supports our collective work, the community, and the responsibilities of this role.

What You Bring

• Masters degree in Psychology, Behaviour Analysis, social work, or a related field.
• Required at least 2 years relevant experience focusing on Behavior Intervention.
• Preferred experience working with Indigenous communities and understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and contemporary issues.
• Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
• Strong understanding of evidence-based behavioral intervention strategies and child development principles.
• Ability to develop and implement individualized behavioral plans tailored to children’s needs.
• Strong organizational and record-keeping skills to maintain accurate client files and program documentation.

Preferred:

• Indigenous candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
• Lived experience as a member of a First Nations community.
• Knowledge and understanding of Seabird Island’s culture, traditions, teachings, community dynamics.
• Ability to respond quickly and professionally to community or colleague needs and inquiries.
• Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.

• Understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and contemporary issues.
• Experience working within Indigenous communities and applying culturally safe practices.
• Understanding of intergenerational trauma and its impacts on Indigenous peoples and communities.
