Job Location BEACH - St. Simons Island, GA 31522 Salary Range $19.20 Hourly

Job Shift Day

This position monitors the safety and welfare of all beach patrons to prevent drowning and other accidents through constant patron surveillance of his/her assigned area and enforcement of recreational rules and regulations established by Glynn County.

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Supervise all areas of assigned beach facilities designated for swimming; ensures compliance with all applicable rules, regulations, laws, standards, policies, and procedures
  • Monitors safety and welfare of swimmers and other individuals; ensures adherence to established safety guidelines; cautions swimmers regarding unsafe areas, conditions, or activities; initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations
  • Identifies inappropriate actions by beach patrons; handles situations involving excessive noise, disruptive behavior, potential violence, or other problems; monitors crowd activities and contacts law enforcement as needed; takes appropriate disciplinary action to maintain a peaceful environment
  • Conducts and/or assists with water rescues of swimmers in danger of drowning; administers CPR/First Aid as needed; obtains emergency medical assistance when necessary
  • Coordinates medical/rescue activities with emergency medical personnel
  • Operates and maintains motorized and non-motorized equipment for transportation and rescue purposes; equipment may include a motor vehicle, jet ski or wave runner, ATV/UTV, kayak, guard stand, rescue board, rescue tube, first aid supplies, hand tools, hand-held radio, telephone, computer, and lifesaving technology
  • Reports all accidents or injuries; completes accident/incident reports and submits to supervisor; prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, requisitions, checklists, or other documents; receives various forms, reports, correspondences, first aid guidelines/policies, CPR procedures, manuals, reference materials, or other documentation; review, completes, processes, forwards, or retains as appropriate
  • Inspects and monitors beach and surrounds areas' grounds to identify potential hazards, such as broken glass, protruding nails on boardwalk, broken/loose steps, missing boards, marine life, or other situations which may cause injury to beach patrons and swimmers
  • Keeps accurate and timely record of daily beach activities to include but not limited to water conditions, weather conditions, tide charts, hazards, and general announcements
  • Attends all mandatory staff meetings and in-service training programs to maintain physical stamina and mental awareness, practice and/or improve skills and overall fitness; maintain and operate safety equipment, administer CPR/First Aid, and render aid necessary to rescue and resuscitate near-drowning victims
  • Performs various maintenance tasks associated with beach equipment, which may include making minor repairs to correct beach and equipment safety hazards
  • Monitors inventory of equipment and supplies; ensures availability of adequate materials to conduct work activities; initiatives requests for new/replacement materials
  • Ensures reasonable cleanliness and aesthetic appearance of assigned common areas
  • Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, swimmers, the public, emergency medical providers, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems; works as part of a larger response team under the direction of the Recreation Manager, Senior Lifeguard, Recreation Coordinator, or Recreation Assistant, as assigned
  • Maintains a professional appearance and demeanor including abiding by uniform requirements
  • Beach operations is generally 7 days a week from the Friday before Memorial Day to mid-August, and weekends from mid-August through September. Spring sandbar patrol occurs on designated weekends in April and May.
  • Beach lifeguards are on duty daily from 10am to 6:30pm. This position will work a flexible schedule that will include days, weekends, and holidays. Performance of major duties will require exposure to adverse environmental conditions such as dirt, sand, mud, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature extremes, bright/dim light, toxic agents, violence, disease, pathogenic substances, marine life, and insects/pests.

Glynn County offers a $500 hiring bonus for beach lifeguards who meet certain eligibility requirements.

Glynn County provides training for beach lifeguards subject to certain terms and conditions.

Minimum

Qualifications

Must possess and maintain (or be able to obtain soon after hire) valid lifeguard certifications for the beach environment (Lifeguard Certification and Open Water Rescue certification), American Red Cross CPR/AED/First Aid for the Professional Rescuer. Prior lifeguarding and/or swimming experience is preferred. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
