Batcher (Vars)

Tomlinson is currently accepting applications for a DZ Delivery Driver at our 3150 Rideau Road location.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The Batcher is responsible for producing high-quality concrete safely, accurately, and efficiently while supporting the daily delivery schedule. This role coordinates batching, truck loading, material inventory, plant communication, quality checks, and operational reporting to help ensure consistent service to customers and efficient plant operations.

REQUIREMENTS

Batching and Customer Communication

  • Coordinate truck loading requirements and ensure drivers receive accurate load information.
  • Batch concrete utilizing batching software in accordance with approved mix designs and production requirements.
  • Confirm trucks are directed to the appropriate job and support the daily delivery schedule.
  • Coordinate deliveries outside normal operating hours when required and communicate relevant details to Customer Service.
  • Communicate driver-related schedule impacts or concerns to the Truck Foreman.
  • Coordinate after-hours customer delivery updates and ensure relevant changes are communicated clearly to Customer Service.

Quality, Materials and Inventory

  • Monitor concrete slump and temperatures coming out of the plant and notify Quality Control of mix, material, or site-related concerns.
  • Perform sand moisture and temperature checks as required.
  • Coordinate raw material deliveries and enter delivery receptions accurately.
  • Perform inventory checks of raw materials and coordinate manual admixtures when required.
  • Use concrete monitoring software and report malfunctioning truck monitoring hardware.

Communication and Reporting

  • Relay driver feedback on site conditions and reported issues to Customer Service, Quality Control, and Truck Foremen as appropriate.
  • Track incidents and operational concerns through ISO reporting.
  • Maintain accurate plant logs and notify Operations of plant defects or maintenance concerns.
  • Communicate customer-related delivery concerns through the appropriate internal channels.

Plant Operations, Safety and Housekeeping

  • Complete daily plant walkthroughs and report health, safety, equipment, or housekeeping concerns.
  • Maintain plant housekeeping standards and support safe, efficient plant operations.
  • Assist drivers with slump adjustments when required and in accordance with company procedures.
  • Assist with loader duties, block pickups, and customer requests when required.

Training and Team Support

  • Assist with training backup batchers and support consistent batching practices across the team.
  • Foster a collaborative team environment with an emphasis on safety, communication, efficiency, and customer service.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Experience using SharePoint, Outlook, Teams, Excel, and Word.
  • Organized, proactive, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Flexible schedule and willingness to support operations outside normal business hours when required.
  • Self-motivated, punctual, dependable, and safety-focused.
  • Strong time-management, communication, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Able to coordinate effectively with customers, drivers, Customer Service, Quality Control, Operations, and plant staff to support delivery updates and service concerns.
  • Knowledge of Command Alkon mBatch is an asset.
  • Knowledge of Mix Pilot or other concrete monitoring software is an asset.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Working conditions are normal for an industrial production environment. Work may require availability before or after normal business hours depending on the production schedule. The employee may need to sit for long periods of time, work in a plant environment, and occasionally assist with operational duties outside the batch office.

Operational Hours

  • Average batching hours of operation are typically 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., subject to production needs.
  • The plant’s operating schedule may vary based on seasonal demand, project requirements, and operational needs.
  • Seasonal scheduling may apply depending on operational demand, with potential opportunities to support other operational roles during slower periods.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent; additional technical or construction-related training is considered an asset.
  • 3+ years of experience in construction, concrete, quarry/scale operations, plant operations, or a similar industry.
  • Previous concrete industry experience will be considered an asset.
