Job Description

Systems Planning Corporation (SPC), a subsidiary company of GAI Consultants, Inc., is seeking an experienced researcher to conduct rare, threatened, and endangered (RTE) bat studies on development projects throughout the Northeast, Midwest, and Southeast.

Job Duties:

  • Perform field site reconnaissance, habitat assessments, acoustic sampling, acoustic analyses, mist-netting, portal searches, portal trapping, and/or radiotelemetry.
  • Assisting with data entry and/or reporting, surveys for other RTE species, or other environmental work as needed.
  • Coordinate with team leaders, field supervisors, land agents, and/or landowners as required.
  • Performs work under no supervision, must oversee staff on the same field team, as well as lead other field teams, including sub-consultants.
  • Qualified to obtain or possess a state scientific collection permit for bats (in multiple states), possesses or is listed on a USFWS scientific collection permit, and is on qualified surveyor lists in multiple states.
  • Possesses expert working knowledge of the subject matter.
  • Detail-oriented research skills with note-taking and data recording ability.
  • Analytical thinking skills.
  • Ability to lead multiple teams performing independent work to survey and record data.
  • Ability to interact with clients and client representatives.
  • Field capable and able to hike and transport field gear in variable and adverse environmental conditions and at night.
  • Overnight travel within 500 miles for weekly to 10-day shifts is required. Fieldwork in rough terrain, exposed to weather and outdoor hazards. Traveling to remote areas and driving on rough roads in a variety of weather conditions can be expected.
  • Rabies vaccination is required.

General Characteristics

  • Begins to demonstrate critical thinking skills, works on small projects or portions of larger projects; assist Task Managers with aspects of projects; proactively implements Quality Management System (QMS) for project deliverables.

Minimum Years of Experience

  • 4+ Years Experience

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Sciences or similar field of study

Certification/Licensure

  • Driver’s License required

Technical Responsibilities

  • Working towards leading field studies and data collection; Generates well written, technically sound documents with little assistance from senior staff and requiring minor edits; Agency interface; Data analysis and interpretation; Acquires ability to research Federal, State, and local applicable environmental regulations and guidance and applies them to project specifics; extensive knowledge of wetland delineations; wetland restoration and wetland design; ecological field surveys; endangered species surveys (understand the requirements of the endangered species act, understand when and how to consult with these agencies, and have working knowledge of the species within the area we work), and duties as required; May become specialized within a specific discipline; receives technical training for career enhancement.

Project and Task Management

  • Works as a part of a team and coordinates work with others.
  • Assists in determining schedule and budget requirements.

Management Responsibility

  • Assigning and overseeing tasks under the direct supervision of the task manager and maintaining budgets and schedules; keeping very close communication with Task Managers; assisting Project Managers or Task Manager with proposal preparation; scopes of work and project component cost estimates.
  • Guidance and oversight from Task Managers and Project Managers.
  • No managerial responsibilities at this level.

Communication Skills

  • Possess effective oral and written communication skills; interacts well with other staffs; interact with clients with close oversight, interacts closely with Project Managers and various Department Managerial Staff, performs well with client communications.
