This position contributes to the success of Starbucks and the University of Arizona by leading daily store operations and ensuring the delivery of legendary customer service. The Shift Lead supports the Starbucks Experience by providing prompt, high-quality beverages and food products while maintaining a clean, organized, and welcoming environment within the Student Union. In addition to performing all barista functions, the Shift Lead oversees staff during assigned shifts, monitors inventory and product quality, and ensures compliance with operational standards. This position exercises sound judgment, initiative, and creativity in solving day-to-day challenges, guiding team members, and supporting training and performance expectations. Duties & Responsibilities

  • Leads daily store operations to ensure efficient workflow and adequate staffing and delegation of duties.
  • Leads and facilitates the training of new baristas to ensure compliance with franchise standards.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert in beverage preparation, customer service, point of sale and operational procedures.
  • Monitors the progress of barista training.
  • Escalates employee performance or concerns to supervisors as appropriate.
  • Maintains product inventory levels, conducts weekly counts, and coordinates storeroom orders to maintain appropriate stock.
  • Receives, verifies, and stores incoming deliveries; rotates stock and ensures proper labeling and freshness.
  • Monitors food and beverage quality throughout the day, maintaining compliance with safety, temperature, and sanitation standards.
  • Identifies inventory discrepancies, waste, or shortages and recommends solutions to improve accuracy and reduce loss.
  • Opens and closes registers, retrieves and verifies banks, and ensures accurate daily deposits and reports.
  • Rings up orders accurately, accepts payments, and maintains accountability for financial transactions.
  • Greets and serves customers in a friendly, efficient, and professional manner, modeling Starbucks’ customer service standards.
  • Assists team members in resolving customer concerns or special requests promptly and courteously.
  • Promotes the franchise experience by maintaining cleanliness, comfort, and organization across service areas.
  • Provides input on operational improvements and assists management in implementing new policies or initiatives.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of Food Pro and forecasting, service needs, and modify delivery information.
  • Knowledge of and actively supports labor cost and food cost budgets.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills.
  • Knowledge of commercial and/or institutional food service equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to multi-task is essential.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to occasionally transport/move up to 50 lbs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience required.
  • Availability to work flexible hours that may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, nights and/or holidays.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Supervisory experience in a restaurant or retail.

Notice of Availability of the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report
In compliance with the Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act (Clery Act), each year the University of Arizona releases an Annual Security Report (ASR) for each of the University’s campuses. These reports disclose information including Clery crime statistics for the previous three calendar years and policies, procedures, and programs the University uses to keep students and employees safe, including how to report crimes or other emergencies and resources for crime victims. As a campus with residential housing facilities, the Main Campus ASR also includes a combined Annual Fire Safety report with information on fire statistics and fire safety systems, policies, and procedures.
