Bariatric Program Lead - Outpatient Registered Nurse (RN)

Wellness Center, Springfield IL

This is an in-person position, Monday-Friday, no weekends, holiday or call

Previous surgery experience in a surgical unit, surgeon's office, or OR setting is strongly preferred

Coordinates clinical aspects of the Bariatric Surgery Program. Acts as liaison between hospital clinical departments, patients, and surgeons’ offices. Coordinates the interdisciplinary clinical components of the program to ensure the goals and objectives of the program and collaborates with department manager to ensure adherence to ASMBS/ACS guidelines for participation in the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP). Responsible for planning and coordinating staff education, patient education as well as patient support activities Coordinates multidisciplinary team communication as it relates to the care of the bariatric surgery patient. Collaborates with department staff to facilitate patients through appropriate services within the Memorial Wellness Center. Coordinates Bariatric Interdisciplinary Clinic visits for pre- and post-operative patient care. Qualifications

Education:

  • Diploma of Nursing or Associate Degree in Nursing required; BSN preferred

Licensure/Certification/Registry:

  • Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois required.
  • Current BLS/CPR certification required.
  • Bariatric Nurse Certification through the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) required or obtained within 2 years of hire

Experience:

  • Three (3) years clinical experience required.
  • Data management experience required.
  • Experience providing education as well as presentations for consumers/public

Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to function in autonomous/independent role; highly motivated and self-directed.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills.
  • Process-oriented.

Responsibilities

Program Coordination

  • Coordinates clinical aspects of the comprehensive Bariatric Surgery Program including providing patient education, support groups, care coordination among multidisciplinary team members, communication of care plans with patients and primary care providers, and ensuring compliance with clinical pathways and protocols.
  • Identifies and incorporates ASMBS/ACS MBSAQIP clinical guidelines into SMH’s Bariatric Surgery Program design and implementation.
  • Administrates the MBS Committee quality meetings.
  • Assists in metabolic and bariatric program development, manages the accreditation process, ensures continuous compliance with MBSAQIP standards, maintains relevant pathways and protocols, patient education, monitors outcomes data and collection, QI initiatives, and the education of relevant staff with a focus on metabolic and bariatric patient safety.
  • The bariatric coordinator manages the development of written protocols and education of nursing staff detailing rapid communication and basic response to critical patient findings that are required to minimize delays in the diagnosis and treatment of a serious adverse event.
  • The bariatric coordinator serves as the liaison between SMH and MBSAQIP. The bariatric coordinator serves as the liaison between SMH and all metabolic and bariatric proceduralists at SMH and any general surgeon providing bariatric surgery call coverage.
  • The bariatric coordinator maintains the documentation of the call schedule provided by all the covering general surgeons, as well as providing access of the call schedule to all departments of the facility that provide care for metabolic and bariatric patients.
  • The bariatric coordinator must be present for and actively participate in each MBSAQIP site visit.
  • Coordinates the multidisciplinary Bariatric Surgery Program Team which meets regularly to review patient cases, program activities and resolve operational problems or concerns.
  • Collaborates with department director and Bariatric surgeons to write and update policies, protocols, procedures, staff education and patient education materials for the Bariatric Surgery Program main and satellite locations. Ensures these meet ASMBS/ACS MBSAQIP guidelines.

  • Organizes and participates in ongoing educational events for health care professionals and the public related to bariatric surgery.
  • In collaboration with department director, bariatric physician leaders, SMH administrative leadership, and satellite location leadership, ensures that facilities and equipment are appropriate for meeting the needs of bariatric surgery patients.
  • Performs other related work as required or requested.
