Opened in 1986, Nick Rail Music has a stellar reputation both inside the music products industry and in the community. We specialize in school music sales, rentals, repairs, and support and also have a full line of fretted and percussion products.

We are looking for an experienced band repair technician to work on customer and store owned instruments (entry to professional level).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Repair rental inventory, school account instruments and customer repairs
  • Provide great customer service to customers via phone, written and face-to-face interaction
  • Order repair parts and supplies as necessary.
  • Accurate completion of all repair paperwork, including repair tickets and shop logs.
  • Maintains technical knowledge on tools and techniques.
  • Maintain operational safety of the repair shop including safely using tools and equipment, completing periodic audits, training and hazardous material inventories.
  • Maintain safe, clean and efficient working conditions.
  • Consistently adhere to Nick Rail Music’s employee handbook and customer service standards.
  • Practice sound inventory maintenance and care.
  • Other duties as assigned and based on the needs of the business.

Benefits and Compensation

  • Hourly compensation $20-35 depending on experience
  • Full time, 40 hours expectation with mandatory overtime during the summer months. Schedule is Monday through Friday.

Requirements

Education, Experience and Qualifications:

Required Qualifications: All candidates must perform a bench test with Senior Repair Technician.

  • Graduation from a certified instrument repair program or comparable experience
  • A minimum of three years brass and woodwind repair experience
  • Ability to represent Nick Rail Music in accordance with Core Values.
  • Strong communication skills
  • Detail oriented and ability to prioritize work while under pressure in a fast-paced environment

Supervisory Responsibilities: None

Work Environment: Repair shop and retail store

The person in this position:

  • Will frequently need to lift 25-50 pounds, and occasionally up to 100 pounds.
  • The performance of this position may require the use of equipment and handling of hazardous chemicals. Adherence to all safety procedures and equipment is required.

Nick Rail Music, established in Santa Barbara, California in 1986, is first and foremost a band and orchestral dealer, catering to both the school market and the private or professional musician. Our second store, Nick Rail Music/Agoura Hills opened in 1998, followed by stores in Santa Clarita, Redlands, San Diego and Bakersfield. Our most recent store addition was in 2020 in Camarillo, an exclusive orchestral strings shop: Penrose Strings by Nick Rail Music. We are the largest Yamaha band instrument dealer in the state, with franchises for virtually all other major name brands. Our percussion department covers concert, marching and drum set; we also carry acoustic guitars, electric guitars and basses, portable keyboards, sound reinforcement, and related products. Our stores offer accessories for all departments; our sheet music department specializes in instrument methods and jazz. Our 7 repair shops expertly service thousands of instruments annually for school districts, individual customers and professional players alike.

Nick Rail Music provides service as needed to school music programs throughout southern California; representatives visit band directors and band students weekly in San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Ventura, Los Angeles, Kern, San Bernardino, Riverside, Orange, and San Diego counties.

Our rental program is geared toward the beginning student at the elementary or junior high school level. We rent new or used major name-brand instruments, and support students from their first to their final instruments.

All Nick Rail Music stores feature teaching studios where over 1000 students are instructed on a weekly basis by many of the finest brass, woodwind and string teachers in southern California.
