Description of the Position: (Purpose of the Position): The Community School Piano Teacher provides beginner individual, 30-minute piano lessons to one or more youth enrolled in the Community School program; interacts with elementary-aged children their families; prepares tailored lessons for each youth and sets up the piano equipment prior to the lesson,enforces program behavioral rules and safety guidelines, and coordinates with the Community School Site Leads at each site. The Community School Piano Teacher will also have a faculty mentor from St. Olaf to guide them through the lesson teaching process.

Duties and Responsibilities: Teach beginner piano lessons to elementary age youth, which includes: preparing appropriately scaffolded lessons using a template, offering gentle corrections, modeling good music making habits, communicating with parents, making connections with students, tracking lesson progress, and monitoring the behavior of the students to ensure their safety, as well as compliance with behavioral guidelines, rules and standards of the Community School program. Set up and tear down equipment needed for piano lessons. Videorecord lessons for feedback and self-observation purposes. Communicate with Community School staff to determine schedule and logistics. Communicate and meet with mentor throughout the year.
Qualifications: (Education/Experience/Skills) Be a dependable, organized, hard-working individual who likes to work with K-5 students. Be energetic, patient and caring. Must be able to adapt to an ever-changing environment. Must be proficient in piano and have sufficient experience. All applicants should submit a music resume that includes experience with piano (years, repertoire, etc.) and any teaching experience. Ideally, students will be actively taking piano lessons from faculty at St. Olaf.
Work hours are on-site, at all three Northfield Elementary Schools (Greenvale, Spring Creek, and Bridgewater), Monday-Thursday, 3:30pm – 5pm. Positions start in mid/late-October through mid-May. Position is for 2026-27 academic year.
Physical and Environmental Factors:
This position requires twisting/pivoting, grasping/handling, pushing/pulling, lifting and carrying objects up to 20 lbs., and repetitive motions to perform the essential functions. It also requires rare exposure to loud noise, wet or humid conditions indoors, extremely cold, and extreme heat to perform the essential functions. Candidates must possess the ability to safely perform the physical work required of all duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
