Job Description

The Autonomous Vehicle (AV) Technical Trainer is responsible for designing, delivering, and maintaining comprehensive training programs that prepare technicians, operators, and field support staff to work effectively and safely with autonomous systems. This role goes beyond classroom instruction—it involves hands-on, in-field coaching, ensuring personnel can confidently perform diagnostics, calibrations, repairs, and operational support on AV platforms.

The trainer acts as a bridge between engineering, operations, and field teams, translating complex technical requirements into practical learning experiences. The role is accountable for maintaining consistent training standards across markets while adapting to local operational realities as the AV program scales

Job Responsibilities:

  • Design and facilitate onboarding and ongoing training programs for technicians, covering technical skills, customer service, and compliance with company standards
  • Integrate training modules around the Cycle of Service, efficiency best practices, and technician core competencies.
  • Develop training resources, playbooks, and job aids to support ongoing skill development.
  • Develop and facilitate technical training modules covering AV hardware, software, safety, and operational protocols.
  • Incorporate simulations, hands-on training, and real-time ride/test track demonstrations.
  • Tailor content to different roles (operators, field techs, fleet partners, service staff).
  • Train new hires on baseline AV competencies, safety procedures, and operational standards.
  • Conduct refresher and upskilling sessions as technology and SOPs evolve.
  • Certify technician competency through assessments, observed field work, and tracking.
  • Partner with operations, engineering and safety teams to ensure training reflects the most current software releases, vehicle updates, and compliance requirements.
  • Work closely with field ops leaders to align training with daily workflows, dealer expectations, and client SLAs.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) and mentor for teams troubleshooting advanced AV issues.
  • Measure training effectiveness using feedback surveys and post-training performance metrics.
  • Track certifications, re-certifications, and compliance with regulatory and client-specific standards for all technicians.
  • Ensure 100% adherence to safety protocols in training environments and during field shadowing.
  • Gather feedback from technicians and managers to refine training effectiveness

Qualifications:

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in engineering, Automotive Technology, Mechatronics, Computer Science, or related field (preferred).
  • 3+ years of experience in technical training, automotive service, robotics, AV operations or automotive repair facility
  • Direct experience with autonomous systems, sensors (LiDAR, radar, cameras), telematics, or EV platforms strongly preferred.
  • Experience training technicians and operators in a field-service or dealership environment a plus.
  • General mechanical skills
  • ASE certification is (preferred)
  • Must meet company’s requirements for employment.
  • Valid in-state driver’s license and have and maintain an acceptable, safe driving record.
  • Deep knowledge of vehicle diagnostics, calibration, and electronic systems.
  • Ability to translate complex AV/robotics concepts into practical, clear learning experiences.
  • Strong facilitation, presentation, and communication skills – both in writing and verbal
  • Comfort with field environments (garages, test tracks, live deployments).
  • Adaptability in evolving, high-growth environments; strong problem-solving mindset.
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions and information

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, and demonstrate vehicle operations for extended periods during training sessions.
  • Frequent use of hands for handling tools, equipment, and training materials.
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds occasionally (vehicle components, training equipment, etc.).
  • Comfortable working in shop, depot, or test track environments with varying temperatures, noise levels, and exposure to moving vehicles.
  • Visual and auditory acuity sufficient to observe demonstrations, inspect components, and monitor safety compliance.
  • Must be willing and able to travel throughout the United States to conduct training sessions, visit client facilities and support operations at various depot locations as required by business needs.
