Summary

Performs entry level technical work maintaining and repairing a variety of automotive, heavy equipment and maintenance equipment, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Equipment Service Technician/Foreman.

Examples of duties

Performing basic maintenance and repair on small automotive and maintenance equipment; ensuring safe operation of vehicles and equipment.

  • Examines vehicles based on customer concerns.
  • Performs basic maintenance, including changing motor oil and filters, rotating and balancing tires new and used, and checking all fluids and lights.
  • Repairing or replacing worn parts such as chassis/steering parts, brake pads and rotors, spark plugs, fuel system components, and emission related components.
  • Identify mechanical and electrical problems with both manual and computerized diagnostic equipment.
  • Follow checklists to ensure thorough examination of all parts and systems.
  • Maintain electronic records of repairs and parts used on each vehicle/equipment.
  • Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities.
  • Report discrepancies to Vehicle Maintenance Shop Foreman/ Vehicle Maintenance Director.
  • Keep a clean and safe working environment.
  • Work in a team environment and learn from peer and leadership feedback.
  • Performs assigned functions as a Disaster Ready Team (DRT) member, if appointed or volunteer.
  • All other duties and tasks as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications

Basic knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment including electronic and computer-aided diagnostic equipment used in the repair of cars, trucks, construction and maintenance equipment; general knowledge and skill in the use and operation of shop tools and machinery, such as drills, presses, grinders, welding, micrometers, brake relining and drum grinding machines; ability to diagnose defects in the drive trains, chassis and other components of automotive equipment; ability to detect by inspection worn or broken automotive parts; performs repair and maintenance of a variety of gasoline, diesel and hydraulic powered engines; ability to keep records of repairs and service operations and to make reports; ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems; ability to interpret and work from sketches, diagrams and installation and repair charts; working knowledge of hazards and proper safety precautions involved in operating and repairing motorized heavy equipment; ability to read and interpret technical specifications related to service equipment, ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

Physical Requirements:

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, using hands or fingers,

handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions, frequently requires sitting, speaking or hearing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling and lifting and occasionally requires climbing or

balancing; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or

quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written

or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing

general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, frequently requires exposure to wet, humid conditions (non-weather), exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic

or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires exposure to extreme cold, exposure to extreme heat and exposure to the risk of electrical

shock; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

Supplemental information

  • High school diploma or GED with a minimum of one year experience in automotive repair or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license
  • Must possess or have the ability to acquire NC State Safety/Emissions Inspection License
  • Must have basic hand tools to include wrenches, ratchets, air tools
  • Salary will be determined based on qualifications, internal equity, budget, and market considerations.
