About the Role

The Automotive Mechanic performs skilled maintenance, diagnostics, repairs, and preventative maintenance on automobiles, light-duty trucks, and installed/mounted equipment within the Town’s fleet. This position is responsible for inspecting, troubleshooting, diagnosing, repairing, and replacing components to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of vehicles and equipment.

The Automotive Mechanic works with gas, diesel, hybrid, and electric drivetrains and uses modern diagnostic equipment and repair techniques to identify and resolve complex mechanical and electrical issues. Work is performed under regular supervision and requires considerable technical knowledge, sound judgment, and attention to safety and quality.

Qualifications

Vehicle and Equipment Maintenance

  • Performs preventative maintenance, servicing, and repairs on automobiles, light-duty trucks, and aftermarket lighting and accessories.
  • Inspects, diagnoses, repairs mechanical, electrical, fuel, cooling, brake, steering, suspension, air conditioning, and hydraulic systems.
  • Performs advanced electrical diagnostics, including troubleshooting wiring systems, electronic controls, sensors, and reflashing vehicle modules.
  • Conducts North Carolina Safety and Emissions Inspections.
  • Repairs or replaces defective or worn vehicle and equipment components.
  • Changes fluids, lubricates equipment, installs batteries, and replaces belts, hoses, filters, fuses, and related components.
  • Repairs and replaces tires and performs wheel balancing and alignment functions.
  • Conducts vehicle safety inspections and recommends necessary repairs.

Diagnostic and Technical Services

  • Utilizes computerized diagnostic equipment, scanners, meters, gauges, and testing devices to identify equipment malfunctions.
  • Reads and interprets technical manuals, repair specifications, wiring diagrams, and schematics.
  • Performs troubleshooting and diagnostic testing to determine root causes of mechanical and electrical failures.
  • Maintains accurate repair records, maintenance logs, and preventative maintenance documentation.

Shop Operations and Safety

  • Operates a variety of tools and equipment including air compressors, hydraulic jacks, tire changers, tire balancers, diagnostic scanners, meters, gauges, and related shop equipment.
  • Maintains a clean, safe, and organized work area and garage environment.
  • Adheres to all departmental safety policies, procedures, and applicable regulations.
  • Assists with emergency repairs and equipment breakdowns as needed.
  • Performs related duties and special projects as assigned.

Supplemental information

  • Technical or trade school degree in Automotive Technology, Diesel Technology, Mechanical Systems, or a related field and one (1) year of automotive repair experience; OR
  • High School Diploma or GED and three (3) to six (6) years of progressively responsible automotive repair experience; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the position.

Special Requirements

  • Possession of a valid North Carolina Driver’s License.
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina Safety and Emissions Inspection Certification.
  • Possession of valid manufacturer certifications, ASE, and/or other relevant certifications.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain additional certifications, licenses, and specialized training as required by the department and assigned duties.
