Job Description

This position consists of providing assistance in mechanical work in the preventative maintenance and small repairs to the sanitation fleet. Work is performed under close supervision and involves providing assistance to higher level mechanics upon request. Work is inspected and reviewed while in progress.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the general supervision of a shop foreman or shop manager, employees in this class are responsible for routine maintenance including but not limited to lubrications, repair and adjustments work on motor vehicles and automotive mechanical equipment. This employee will also assist mechanics during idle time (if any). This employee will also replace filters, hoses, starters and other minor parts.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience in proper preventative maintenance tasks as well as experience in vehicular mechanical work. Must also have minimum computer skills for performing data entries and being able to obtain information from a mechanics computer station.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Educational development which produces the ability to read, write and apply common sense understanding to the carrying out of oral or written instructions, or equivalent combination of training and experience that would provide the following knowledge, abilities and skills:

  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and techniques used in repair and maintenance of automotive equipment.
  • Ability to learn repetitive tasks quickly and to work without immediate supervision.
  • Ability to handle small painting jobs.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of trade.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Must be able to communicate in English.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

General math skills.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATION:

Valid Texas Driver’s License.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Must be able to safely handle the weights involved with the job description. Will have to utilize his/her own tools (does not include specialty tools which will be provided by the city.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Large automotive garage.
